KEA has heard concerns regarding the Stay Interview process. At this time, it does not appear that the district is interested in hiring a third party to conduct the interviews. However, several members have voiced that they are not comfortable speaking with HR about job related issues. In response, KEA leadership will be having one-on-one conversations with members who wish to give feedback regarding why they have chosen to stay in Kent. Members will also have the opportunity to share any other concerns they may have. This information will then be share with the district. Doing it this way, will ensure anonymity while providing an opportunity for your voice to be heard.
We will begin school visits next month and continue throughout the school year. Building reps will be notified when we plan to visit your school.

Professional Development Opportunity:
Understanding Implicit Bias & Ourselves
|
|
This summer, WEA offered a "train the trainers" course on an Implicit Bias curriculum developed by the Diamond Law training staff. KEA is offering this course beginning with the introductory session which explores the science behind implicit bias; and how individuals carry this bias each day. This course builds on years of study and tests conducted by Harvard University's "Project Implicit." This first session will also explore how implicit bias and microaggressions impact those around us regardless of the intent. Follow up topics will be more specifically focused on issues of race, ability, gender, and LGBTQ status.
Tuesday, December 4, 2018 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm
KEA Office- 10427 SE 244th St.
Whether you sign up for the session or not, please check out "Project Implicit" and take a few of the implicit bias assessments.
This research-based course for educators explores issues of implicit bias based upon race, ethnicity and LGBTQ status through an analysis of "microaggressions" and "micro-insults."
Course Objectives:
- Explore issues of implicit bias and microaggressions
- Develop an understanding of [1] how our beliefs, values, and experiences inform one's implicit biases and [2] how our implicit biases and behaviors impact others (students, colleagues, families, etc.)
- Learn about additional implicit bias resources for educators

The Human Resources Department has been forwarding the assault information to KEA daily. The data has been alarming. While we were aware that assaults were occurring, we had no idea to what degree and the frequency of such assaults. We are receiving information upwards from three to seven times a day. These reports show that teachers have been hit, punched, kicked, stabbed, or hit by objects repeatedly. KEA is addressing these issues with the district. It is KEA's stance that all students and staff should be in a safe environment while working at KSD.
