Student Removal v. Classroom Exclusion
|
|
KEA has been receiving an increasing amount of calls regarding classroom disruptions and discipline. Many KEA members have been told that if they remove a student from class, they must notify the parents within 24 hours. There is some verbiage in the new discipline laws about parents being notified within 24 hours for an emergency removal, but it does not dictate who the communication comes from. Furthermore, there is nothing in the law that says an exclusion from the classroom such as the ISS room or going out into the hall is an emergency removal. We understand that conflicting information is coming from district administration, and we are addressing the issue. For now, we believe that the current CBA is in line with the new law. You have the right to remove a disruptive student, and administration must work with you before returning the student to your classroom. Failure to follow this procedure is a contract violation.
