What's Up Wednesday?

Student Growth Conferences

The goal that is created between you and your evaluator should be rated a "proficient or distinguished" goal.  A teacher should not leave an evaluator's office until the goal is scored.

It is not required that student growth goals include percentages of growth within in the goal. In addition, there is no requirement that the target itself be a percentage. Unfortunately, some evaluators are requiring teachers to do both in order to get a "proficient or distinguished" goal. The OSPI guidelines state:

"There is no requirement that student growth goals include percentages in either area. Percentages may be helpful ways to characterize the growth in achievement sought and attained, or to determine the meaning of "some," "most," of "all," but are not the only ways to capture these."

KEA also believes that it is not in the teachers best interest to use standardized tests to measure student growth. Tests like iReady or SBA should be avoided. Teacher created measuring tools are best because they measure a "grain size" amount that directly correspond to the goal, but ultimately the tool used to measure the student growth is THE TEACHER'S DECISION. Please contact our office if this becomes an issue with your evaluator.

Committee Work

Most of our schools ask teachers to join committees to support school and district initiatives. Recently several people have asked if they were REQUIRED to serve on building and/or district committees. Some have been told that they cannot receive an evaluation rating of "distinguished" without serving on a committee. By contract, unless it is part of your job to be on a committee (like IEP's, etc.) you are NOT REQUIRED to serve on any committees. Committees are voluntary. If you chose to volunteer, then the committee meetings should be held during principal directed times. If the committee meetings are being held during your planning time or beyond, you should be compensated for that time either by way of Principal Effective Ed. or out of building/district funds. You should fill out a time sheet and turn it in. PBIS committee meetings are a form of a meeting and should be compensated as any other meeting.

One reason KEA and KSD jointly chose the CEL 5D model was because teachers could achieve a "distinguished" rating without having to do additional work outside of the school day. Participating in committee work typically isn't something that is done in your classroom, so it is outside your school day and can't be held against you if you choose not to be on a committee.

We are not suggesting that teachers boycott committee work, but that you should be paid for any extra time that is put in and that you shouldn't fear your evaluation because you chose not to participate in them.
