Are you interested?

For a number of years, UCG has participated in events organized by Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence.  This year, during the window of the anniversary of the Newtown tragedy, Faiths United is joining the Newtown Foundation to support a 50 State National Vigil for All Victims of Gun Violence.  Are you interested in either organizing or helping to plan an event nearby?  If so contact Moderator Lyn Robertson or Pastor Dwight Davidson.  There is potential here for a coalition of concerned people to offer a prayerful & powerful community witness.

Peace & Justice
Discernment Groups!
Two of the large concerns that face us and our society are Climate Change/Earth Care and Racism/Black Lives Matter. What do we as individuals know and need to know about each? What can individuals do about each concern? Can UCG play a role in responding to these concerns?
If you are interested in being a part of either discernment group, please call or email Pastor Dwight and indicate which group you'd like to join (740-587-0336,   dwight@myucg.org).

Do you know of someone who may need some extra care in the congregation?

Contact   Louise Gemmell with details, and she can pass it along to appropriate staff and our Congregational Care group.  Thanks so much!

Opportunities to grow & connect...

The Feminist Class  will be meeting after the Sunday service every Sunday morning except fourth Sundays. Our focus this fall is "Encountering God as a Woman." We will alternate study of Leonard Shlain's book,
The Alphabet Versus the Goddess: The Conflict Between Word and Image, with meetings where we tell stories about our own experiences with female forms of the divine. Next Sunday, Nov. 8, Barbara Klatt will lead a discussion of the book, covering chapters 1-3 (pp. 1-28). There are three copies of the book available through the Ohio library system that can be ordered through any local public library. JoAnne Geiger at Reader's Garden Book Store will also place orders for local pickup.

Laudato Si' Reading Group
Sunday mornings in the chapel, 11:30-12:15 (skipping 4th Sundays for Lunches on the Square).  Next session (Nov. 8), we're discussing the fifth
chapter of Laudato Si', "Lines of Approach & Action" which can by read
"The Pope's writing is strong and comprehensive.  Allow yourself to experience that through the reading."
- Doris Jane Conway

We're taking six weeks (Oct. 4,11,18 and Nov. 1,8,15) to read through the letter carefully, discussing a chapter a week.  Laudato Si' is a  revolutionary call for the church to take a moral stand against the exploitation of people and of our sacred Earth home.

And Doris Jane adds, "For the 'Moral Imperative - Earth Care' bulletin board near the kitchenette, all UCG folks are invited to bring in related cartoons you find, as well as your ideas about 'next steps and strategies' to write up on post-its for the bulletin board! This bulletin board is related to our Laudato Si' reading and discussion!"

Monday Book Group & Meditation...
Monday's 3 PM spiritual life book group has resumed in the Martin library, reviewing/reading the book, Radical Acceptance: Embracing your Life with the Heart of the Buddha by Tara Brach.  This Monday - Ch. 5, "Coming Home to Our Body: The Ground of Radical Acceptance."  Please enter through the "Office" door.  Meditation/Contemplation will follow, from 4:15-4:45.  All are welcome!
                                                                         - Doris Jane Conway

Thursday-night Sitting Zen (Zazen)
Every Thursday night in UCG's chapel. 6:30 PM for first-timers. Bell will ring at 7:00 for a 20 minute sitting. Participants may stay afterwards for 15 minutes or so of sharing if they'd like. Click here for a good, short introduction to sitting from Fr. Ruben Habito's Maria Kannon Zen Center in Dallas. You may bring your own zafu/zabuton if you have a set--there are a number in the chapel as well. You may sit in a chair if it's more comfortable, too. This is free & open to anyone of any (or no) religious tradition.  Peace.
- Dwight

Upcoming Sundays!

November 15th - Involvement & Pledge Sunday

What gifts do you bring?  What talents can you share?  That will be the theme on Nov. 15th.  Bring you pledge card--these will be turned in and dedicated in morning worship.  There will be a Committee Fair in the Chapel after worship!  A great opportunity to find out more or volunteer to get involved in a new way in the coming year.

From Church Moderator, Lyn Robertson:
"We're having a Committee Fair, November 15, during our coffee time right after our church service. You'll be able to talk with the chairs of UCG's committees for 2016 and find out about the work of our committees. You are needed, and we hope you'll decide you want to work on one of the important areas that contributes to our church life!"

November 22nd -- Thanksgiving Sunday "All Age Worship"

All Age Worship at 10 AM will be in the style of an Agape Meal in the Annex Gym.  Our theme is "Stitching the Generations Together."  Do you have a handmade quilt that is meaningful to you?  Bring it on Nov. 22nd to help decorate the walls of the Annex.  Also bring a small 3X5 card briefly sharing the quilt's "story."  Julie Reiswig has a surpise for us this day, too!

At 7 PM that evening, UCG hosts the Granville Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service !  Details below...

GRANVILLE ECUMENICAL THANKSGIVING SERVICE
The Granville Ministerium will hold its annual Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, November 22, at 7:00 pm at The United Church of Granville.

Each year, one of the churches of the Ministerium hosts this community-wide service.

The Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service has been on the Sunday before Thanksgiving for the last several years since so many Granvillians travel over the holiday weekend.  This year, Monsignor Enke of St. Edward's Roman Catholic Church will preach, and Jackie Dawson, musician at the United Church, will be gathering a community choir and church musicians from the Granville churches to provide music for the occasion.  The clergy of the Granville Ministerium will participate, and refreshments will follow the service in UCG's Chapel.  This year's offering has been designated to go to the Food Pantry Network of Licking County.

Cardinal Turkson's spoke at OSU last Monday on Laudato Si'

Respected around the world as a Scripture scholar, an advocate for the poor and disenfranchised in the developing world, and a spokesperson for protecting the environment as a matter of social justice, Cardinal Turkson of Ghana has long made news with his comments linking ecology and human life. He has become the face of climate change at the Vatican, having led the drafting process of Pope Francis's encyclical on the environment.  On Monday, he addressed a crowd of 2,000 at OSU's Mershon Auditorium.

Thanks to Lesha Farias for sending us the URL for viewing this important speech -- Click Here & Listen!
