Moving Forward

by Tom Burkett for the UCG Board

Pastor Daniel has agreed to stay with us as bridge pastor at least through the end of the year, giving us welcome breathing room as we begin the search for our next pastor.

At Sunday’s meeting, the board agreed to seek a settled pastor rather than an interim. Interim pastors help congregations work through transitions and discern their future—work we have already been doing since Alissia’s departure, including through the Thriving Congregations grant.

A board-appointed committee is preparing to review our existing job description and update it to reflect the current needs of our congregation and the strengths and skills we hope our next pastor will bring. On November 8, we’ll introduce the committee and invite your suggestions. During the service, we’ll ask you to write down qualities you hope to find in our next pastor and recommend anyone who would represent us well on the pastoral search committee.

Meanwhile, we will reach out through our Baptist and UCC partner networks, regional denominational leaders, and individual contacts to identify likely candidates.

By the end of November, we hope to have a working job description ready for the search committee. Its approximately five members will represent a cross-section of our congregation’s ages and interests. The search committee will begin work in early December, using the revised description and the candidate suggestions gathered through our outreach.

Although we can’t know how long the search will take, we hope to have a commitment from our next pastor as early as possible in 2027.

These are exciting times at UCG. Thank you for sharing our common life and helping shape our future.

This Sunday

Blyth Barnow will preach this Sunday.

Minister Blyth Barnow is a preacher, harm reductionist, writer, and community organizer. She serves as the Ohio Director at Over Zero, an organization working to prevent and respond to political and identity based violence. For more than a decade she has also offered spiritual care and ritual support through her ministry, Femminary. She lives in Newark with her spouse and three year old kid and has been a member of UCG for a few years now (she just has a bad attendance record!).

Erin Newman will serve as Worship Leader

Congregational Meeting

Following the service this Sunday, we will have a congregational meeting to discuss and vote on needed repairs to the heating and cooling system in the Chapel. These repairs are needed to ensure we can remain comfortable and warm this winter. Some updates will be provided about next steps on finding a pastor.

New Member Sunday November 8, 2026

New Member Sunday will be November 8, 2026. If anyone is interested in joining as a member of the United Church of Granville congregation we would welcome you! Please contact Monda DeWeese at 740-591-4603 or at deweese.monda@gmail.com

Help Wanted: Leaf Wranglers!

The trees have been busy decorating the church lawn with their annual autumn confetti. Unfortunately, they have absolutely no intention of cleaning up after themselves!

We’re looking for a few cheerful volunteers willing to grab a rake, enjoy some fresh fall air, and help us persuade those leaves to move along.

No experience necessary! We have four rakes and three tarps in the vestibule of the office. If you have a rake you could bring that might be helpful in case we have a plethora of volunteers. Many hands make light work – and fewer leaves.

We will likely need people each Sunday until Thanksgiving (or come any other time). The Granville Village vacuum machines will come on Tuesdays or Wednesdays to vacuum them up and we are asked to pile leaves onto the tree lawn (the grass strip located between the sidewalk and the curb or pavement) prior to our scheduled pickup days. The stairway going down to the basement on the Main St side and also the one on the opposite side (by the driveway between the church and the annex) will also need to be cleared. They've asked that we please not mix branches, limbs, or brush into your leaf piles, as debris causes equipment damage and delays. Those will need to be disposed of seperately.

Come for the followship. Stay for the raking. Leaf with our gratitude!

Pastoral Care

If you or someone you know is in need of pastoral support please contact the office and our administrator, Mandy Burkett, will quickly and confidentially provide your information to Dave Ball and Kim Keethler-Ball who are ready to help. We are grateful to have their help in the absence of our pastor.

We have a fellowship fund that is available to assist with financial needs, as necessary. This fellowship fund will be funded, occasionally, through our noisy offerings.

Saturdays at 10:30 am in the Chapel

There will be no Singing Resistance this week (10/27) and Singing Resistance will meet at the courthouse in Newark at 10:30 on 10/31 to encourage voters rather than at the chapel.

Singing resistance is a grassroots movement of local vocalists and citizens who use collective singing to nonviolently protest ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) activity, oppose authoritarianism, and build community care.

We meet every Saturday to sing, share information, and feel better just being with people of like concerns. Coffee and snacks are provided!
