From the Pastor
Friends,
It has been a very full week here at UCG. Between planning for our screening of Where Olive Trees Weep, hammering out our youth activities for the fall, doing a complete walkthrough of the church with contractors (thank you Craig!), planning for our annual stewardship campaign, and everything in between, we have been buzzing around here. I want to thank those of you who are working behind the scenes to make all of this happen - without you, we'd be lost. And a special thanks to Tom and Patti for providing the hot dogs last Sunday - though I will say that eating two was a poor choice on my part. Also: don't put ketchup on your hot dogs.
This Sunday is one of those rare 5th Sundays, and we plan to have some fun with it. So, I hope you'll come for TEE SHIRT SUNDAY! Wear your favorite tee, be it political or colorful or sporty or just plain comfy. And don't forget to layer based on the weather - one never knows.
Here's a link to last week's playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3scVbYOTlr8C0eUNxXrXrH?si=6lRr2XYgT5Syw6NMbiFYIA
Also, below you will find a link to check out my summary of our Annual Feedback Survey. Thank you to the Staff Relations Committee for their work in making this opportunity possible. I do hope you'll take the time to read it, as we believe it accurately summarizes the 'State of the church.' Of course, I will gladly welcome any feedback that you have, as I know Staff Relations will, as well.
Have a great rest of the week, and hope to see you soon!
-Pastor A

Interested in Membership?
We have been blessed with seeing many new faces at our worship services
Before I became a member, I had a lot of questions - and guess who's the new Membership Chair (I bet you can)?
I will be making the invitation announcement to the congregation and our Zoomunity frequently but feel free to talk with me if I can provide any clarification in advance.
We will have a Potential Member Educational meeting on Sunday, October 6, 2024 from 11:15 am to 12:15pm, most likely in the Church Annex. Technology will determine location within the church because this is for everyone, which we are ensuring includes inclusive access by our beloved Zoomunity
I will present an overview of what it means to be a member of UCG, the various types of membership and outlining the specific steps to join. This hour is meant to be a dialogue so I am open to your questions and if I don't have the answers, I commit to find them. As we will have some materials prepared for you, please let me know if you are interested in attending. Looking forward to our discussion and meeting some of the new faces.
New Member/Communion Sunday will be October 27th.
Monda H. DeWeese, Membership Chair

Do you want to know more about Palestine?
Come to a Special Screening of
Where Olive Trees Weep
11:15am, October 13, 2024
The Annex at UCG
The event is free
--Light middle-eastern snacks--
Free will donation
"A beautiful and poignant film that “gives background to the current crisis in Israel/Palestine and brings to light the lives of people we met on our 2022 journey in the occupied West Bank. Their universally human stories speak of inter-generational pain, trauma and resilience. We hope they touch your heart, stir compassion and understanding, and give rise to a pursuit for justice. For without justice, peace remains an empty slogan."
--Maurizio and Zaya Ralitza Benazzo, Directors
We are hosting it for educational purposes and to raise money to send our pastor, Alissia Thompson on a friendship tour to Palestine and give to a Peace Organization in Palestine.

What's Up with our Children & Youth
Nursery care is provided each Sunday in the UCG nursery.
Introducing:
Getting to Know You....Show and Tell with children's church!
The kids in children's church want to get to you know you better! Do you have something you can share? A collection, a talent, a story, something you love to do? It can be interactive, but doesn't have to be. If so, we would LOVE to have you as a guest speaker for children's church. We are looking for one person each month to join us so that we can grow in community together! Please contact Heather Long if you're interested! We can't wait to learn more about you!
The guest speaker is not a replacement for one of the two needed children's church volunteers! We still need two people with background checks (or who are willing to get one) each week with the kiddos, and are looking for a guest speaker as an enhancement.

COVID-19 update: As of May 11, 2023, both the WHO and USA ended their declarations of Covid-19 as a public health emergency. We continue to trust in the love and goodwill of this community to care for self and neighbor with health and safety in mind. As such, we continue to defer to each individual’s conscience regarding the use of masks at UCG and will maintain our ‘mask only’ seating in the Sanctuary. Should you have any questions or concerns about our practice, please contact the church office.
Progress of Columbia Gas:
Columbia Gas contractor Miller Pipeline is back in town continuing work on the installation of natural gas lines. Crews are working on the south side of Broadway from Plum Street headed towards downtown. After they finish this stretch, they will hop back to the north side of Broadway and install main in a similar manner.
