Join us for worship at 10 AM this Sunday

in person or online (via Zoom).

From the Pastor

Friends,

Being back with you this past Sunday was such a joy - thank you for showing up. And how about that MUSIC? What a joy and delight.

As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, I am mindful that some of you may be gathering around what may be uncomfortable tables. So, I offer you this: preserve your peace well. Forego the allure of arguing. And try to love those who might not love the same as you.

As for those of you who will forego observance of the holiday, I wish you peace and rest all the same.

Regardless of our intentions and plans, let us all take a moment to recall the context of this holiday. For some, this will be a National Day of Mourning. I encourage us all to challenge ourselves to decolonize this holiday where and when possible. Here is a great link from the Center for Native American Youth on ways to do just that:

https://www.aspeninstitute.org/blog-posts/10-ways-to-decolonize-your-thanksgiving-tips-from-native-youth-leaders/

Borrowing from the Buddhist tradition, may you all be happy. May you all be peaceful. May you all be free. And let us pray the same for everyone, everywhere.

Hope to see you this first Sunday of Advent as we unleash a 'Feral Hope.'

YOUTH FUNDRAISER

FOR SUMMER CAMP EXPENSES

This fall we are collecting your unwanted earrings, and other jewelry you’re ready to pass along to someone else. Our plan is to sell these items in a display at the Christmas Candlelight Walking Tour on December 7. Our table will be set up next to the soup!

We are also collecting unused gift cards, you know the ones that populate your junk drawer… the ones that make your wallet too fat… the ones you will just never use!! We can sell those, too, and all the profit will help us get to North Carolina in July for the summer camp we love.

There is a collection box at the back of the sanctuary. Please put your jewelry in small bags or envelopes to keep the pieces together, and if you know how much is left on that gift card, just attach a post-it note.

THANK YOU FOR HELPING OUT!

UCG Candlelight Walk Schedule - December 7, 2024

A Candlelight Remembrance & Evening Prayer

Sunday, December 8, 2024

Saint Luke's

Episcopal Church

Silent Prayer at 4:00 PM

Liturgy at 5:00 PM

On Sunday, December 8th, 2024, Saint Luke's Episcopal Church will hold a candlelight prayer service at 4:00 o'clock in the evening. This service will be held in conjunction with Worldwide Candle Lighting Day to remember those who have lost a child. Beginning at four, the sanctuary will be open for silent prayer. A candle altar will be available to light a candle in memory of loved ones lost. At 5:00 PM, Father John Kauffman will lead an Evening Prayer service. Coffee and and refreshments will be available in the Undercroft following the service.

Worldwide Candle Lighting Day is held the second Sunday of December. Worldwide Candle Lighting Day was created by The Compassionate Friends organization in 1966 at the Warwickshire Hospital in England. A chaplain by the name of Simon Stephens had brought together two sets of grieving parents who had just lost their children. He realized the support they gave one another was more than he could do to ease their pain.

ADOPT A FAMILY

UCG will be collecting for the Adopt a Family Program again this Christmas! The Adopt a Family Program is organized by the Salvation Army. Our adopted family is a single mom who lives in Newark with her 3 young boys - ages 2, 6, and 9 years old. We will be collecting to purchase items such as winter coats/hats/gloves, toys off the boys' wish list, and a grocery gift card. If you have any questions, please reach out to Jill Andrews at jandrewsruns@gmail.com. Merry Christmas!

Interested in becoming more involved at UCG?

The following Committees are looking for new leadership in a Chair or Co-Chair position: Christian Ed, Finance & Endowment, Nominating, and Staff Relations.

Joining a committee at UCG as a member is also always welcome! We are also still looking to identify our next Vice Moderator and Treasurer. And, we are looking to identify people who may be interested in fundraising opportunities.

If you have questions or would like more information, please reach out to Julie York and Jill Andrews at jadyork@gmail.com and jandrewsruns@gmail.com.

What's Up with our Children & Youth

Nursery care is provided each Sunday in the UCG nursery.

Introducing:

Getting to Know You....Show and Tell with children's church!

The kids in children's church want to get to you know you better! Do you have something you can share? A collection, a talent, a story, something you love to do? It can be interactive, but doesn't have to be. If so, we would LOVE to have you as a guest speaker for children's church. We are looking for one person each month to join us so that we can grow in community together! Please contact Heather Long if you're interested! We can't wait to learn more about you!

The guest speaker is not a replacement for one of the two needed children's church volunteers! We still need two people with background checks (or who are willing to get one) each week with the kiddos, and are looking for a guest speaker as an enhancement.

COVID-19 update: As of May 11, 2023, both the WHO and USA ended their declarations of Covid-19 as a public health emergency. We continue to trust in the love and goodwill of this community to care for self and neighbor with health and safety in mind. As such, we continue to defer to each individual’s conscience regarding the use of masks at UCG and will maintain our ‘mask only’ seating in the Sanctuary. Should you have any questions or concerns about our practice, please contact the church office.

Progress of Columbia Gas: 10/11/2024

Hello Granville community. Luka here from Columbia Gas providing an update on the gas line replacement project.

Miller Pipeline crews continue with the main line work and are getting closer to completion. We anticipate being able to complete all main like work by the end of October, pending weather conditions. The rest of main line work will be continuing down Thresher; College Street to the west of Thresher; the north side of W Broadway from Plum St to Main St and then up Main St.

Once the main line crews finish their main like work, they will likely join the current service crews to assist with the remaining services. Right now, most of the remaining services are on Thresher, W Broadway from Plum St to Main St, and College to the west of Thresher.

All work at your home including impacts to private property, your service and any relocation of the service line and/or meter will be coordinated in advance with you by Miller Pipeline. If there’s any questions, please let me know.

Once the service line work is completed, crews will complete the full abandonment of the old system which will likely take one to two weeks. For this portion, this is no service impact to residents and the digging is minimal as it will just take small spot holes in right-of-way to disconnect the old system.

In total, with all the aforementioned work, we are hoping to be completely out of Granville by Thanksgiving.

Soft surface restoration to yards will continue as crews finish up service line work. If there’s anything we must return to address, just let us know. Hard surface restoration will be following behind and will weather dependent as we wrap up the project in its entirety. Typically, hard surface restoration is completed in larger sections as opposed to individual address by individual address.

In between our next update, you may contact me via phone or email should anything come up.
