From the Pastor
Friends,
What would Jesus do?
Remember that bracelet fad?
I have asked myself this very question countless times this week in light of the actions of this U.S. administration. I have combed through scripture, fought with Matthew 22:15-22 (look it up, as my father would say), and prayed early and often. What would Jesus do if He were bodily among us today? I want to imagine Him teaching, preaching, and healing until ICE arrested Him. I want to believe He would dare to speak of the Kindom over the empire despite threats to his First Amendment rights. In sum, I have faith that Jesus would simply 'keep on keepin' on' until He was detained. I do not think He would be moved.
Friends, we find ourselves in uncharted territory. The defiance, bullying, and lies of this administration have reached a fever pitch. We do not know what the courts will do. We do not know what our government will do. We do not know if our system of checks and balances will hold. What we do know, however, is that we have an exemplar in Jesus. And this Holy Week, we could stand to follow his lead-
Dine with one another. Care for one another. Serve one another. Be willing to sacrifice for one another. And do not despair in the face of evil.
I wrote a piece for Baptist News Global this week about the parallels between Jesus' trial and the plight of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. I have been so disquieted by his case that I cannot remain silent any longer. You can read the article here, if you'd like: https://baptistnews.com/article/a-holy-week-plea-do-not-let-kilmar-abrego-garcia-be-crucified/
While Jesus may not walk among us today, He gifted us the Holy Spirit to guide us. And right now? I feel guided to speak. Where do you feel guided, beloved?
I don't want any more innocents to go to the Cross.
Walk with courage in these upcoming days.

Good Friday
Taizé Worship Service
Click Here for GOOD FRIDAY BULLETIN | 7:00-8:00 pm in the Chapel
*Please enter in through either Rhoades Chapel or the Office door | This night is in remembrance of Jesus' crucifixion and death.
For this, we will observe a quiet, contemplative time of worship in the Taizé style. Please prepare your hearts and minds for stillness, as this service will be vastly different than our typical Sunday. I ask that you enter the space quietly to maintain the tenor of the event. Our worship will mainly consist of chanting, readings, and periods of silence. | Sunday, April 20

BLESSING OF THE MILAGROS
THIS SUNDAY
| |
Making Milagros with
United Church of Granville
This Lenten season, we are exploring making milagros (Spanish for miracles) that symbolize our desires for our “best life.” In many Latin American cultures, a milagro is presented to God as evidence of a prayer of petition or thanks for something in one’s life. As Pastor Alissia spoke about on Sunday, we are focusing on the “DASH” between our birth and death. What do we want to have happen during that time?
For this experience, the first step is to define that desire for yourself, and then to look for a symbol that you can create (or find) to share on our altar of milagros. Although the examples show body parts, your symbols can be of anything!
| |
This is a guide to how to make your own Milagro:
Your first choice might be to use skills you already have to create a small symbol (about 2.5-3” tall fits best, but if its larger it can go on the surface of the table). Do you crochet or sew, collect elements from nature, draw or paint? You can use any of these talents. If you want to hang these on the altar, create a way to put some thread to hang them on the strings there
(there is extra thread at the work station in the chapel).
If you want to make a milagro at the work station in the chapel, here are the suggested steps:
1. Sketch your symbol on a piece of backing paper. Use this as a pattern by cutting out or cut out after you glue other papers on top.
2. Select colored papers and cut them from the selection provided.
3. Glue these papers to your sketch (using a glue stick), adding layers of colors and shapes.
4. Punch a hole near the top and add a 6” piece of embroidery floss and tie it off once.
You are now ready to bring your Milagro to the altar!

Introducing:
Getting to Know You....Show and Tell with children's church!
The kids in children's church want to get to you know you better! Do you have something you can share? A collection, a talent, a story, something you love to do? It can be interactive, but doesn't have to be. If so, we would LOVE to have you as a guest speaker for children's church. We are looking for one person each month to join us so that we can grow in community together! Please contact Heather Long if you're interested! We can't wait to learn more about you!
The guest speaker is not a replacement for one of the two needed children's church volunteers! We still need two people with background checks (or who are willing to get one) each week with the kiddos, and are looking for a guest speaker as an enhancement.

| COVID-19 update: As of May 11, 2023, both the WHO and USA ended their declarations of Covid-19 as a public health emergency. We continue to trust in the love and goodwill of this community to care for self and neighbor with health and safety in mind. As such, we continue to defer to each individual’s conscience regarding the use of masks at UCG and will maintain our ‘mask only’ seating in the Sanctuary.
