Monday is JUNETEENTH!

The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer.
--Gordon Granger Union General, June 19, 1865

JIBBOOM CLUB #1

Matthew Male, Islandkeeper:

Stories from a lifetime infatuation

with island living

In June NLMS trustee Matthew Male tells the story of the Diving Bell he and his brothers made and used as youthful underwater explorers, and the story of The evacuation of the Great Gull Island Crew to New London during

Hurricane Bell in the 1970s.

Matt will also talk and show photos of his project: A Sense of Place (observations and photos from relatively easily accessible places with a view over time).

Since the dawn of time we have watched our surroundings, whether watching for danger, looking for food, or just watching the beauty or activity around us, humans have observed from the same locations over and over. We are drawn to vantage points, homes with spectacular views command a premium. We value windows with a view in workspaces, porch and scenic overlooks to front row or balcony seats at concerts and events. We like to watch. As we journey through our lives, we remember views we have had. With the advent of artistic renderings and photographs, and films we capture and record these views we are drawn to ,and share them with others.

Matthew will talk about several of his “Watch “ locations ,offshore and some of his favorite Connecticut spots, as well as photos over time in those places.  Come and enjoy the view.

Jibboom is not a 'club' but a friendly gathering of people interested in maritime subjects. Please come and bring a friend. We'll bring refreshments!

Generously sponsored by the Maco Family Fund.

Matthew Male has worked for the American Museum of Natural History’s Great Gull Island Project for 49 years, working the waters at the Eastern part of Long Island Sound. He worked with the Norwalk Aquarium studying the diet of Harbor Seals and has worked with seabirds his entire adult life. Currently Matt is employed by The University of Rode Island, The Audubon Shop in Madison CT, and The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook.

Explore Inside Ledge Light

Come on -- climb up into the lantern room at Ledge Lighthouse!

Take a 15-minute boat ride from the New London waterfront to reach the lighthouse, explore the light for about one hour, then return home.

Tour the area's lighthouses with the one who knows them best. There is every variety of lighthouse within reach of our harbor and the New London Maritime Society owns three of them! On the boat out, view nearby lighthouses and learn their stories, then land at New London Ledge Light and explore inside all the way up to the top.

Thanks to a grant from the New London Water Authority, tickets for New London public school students and their family members are just $5, each.

Visit Ledge Lighthouse

Photo: A crew went out to scrape, paint and clean -- just for you! Ledge Light Foundation president Bruce Buckley (peach cap) and long-time volunteer Phil Medbury (grey cap) ran the show, with recruits Martin Bobenski (red cap), Rock Charles (cap free), and Al Doucette (tan).

This week at the Custom House...

It was the best of times this week at the Custom House. Tuesday's 40th anniversary trustee celebration was simply wonderful! Past, present, & honorary trustees showed up in force to toast NLMS. Trustee Adrianna Bates concocted a truly splendid meal for us all; trustee Lloyd Beachy, the last standing of NLMS's three original incorporators, gave a rousing speech; baker Suzy Boada came through with an amazing cake. It was quite a party. No one wanted to go home (see photo, above)!

Far-flung trustees relayed their congratulations. Honorary trustee Nicholas E. Hanke, MEP, NREMT, wrote: Please pass on my best wishes to Trustees and Staff, as well as my heartfelt appreciation for all of their tireless efforts to maintain and foster the awareness and history of our maritime heritage, as well as U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s and the former U.S. Customs Service’s legacy in southern New England.

We had two new volunteers to assist us, Mohisha Prasad and Ashlyn Autrey.

See photos, below. We have many more on Facebook.

This week Christina Corcoran was back with the third graders from Nathan Hale for year-end field trips. They visited Fort Griswold and Fort Trumbull! Photos, below.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...

You'll remember that in late December the custom house roof failed. We received a terrific grant of seed money from the Palmer Fund, which we then used to apply for a $500,000 state grant. We passed the first round. But last week we learned we did not receive the grant. The news is pretty devastating.
