Durham Principal receives $25,000 Milken Educator Award

Asia Cunningham of Pearsontown Elementary was presented with the National Milken Educator Award.

The award which is also known as the Oscars for Teaching, honors outstanding educators across the country for their innovation, achievements, and leadership.

"I've always wanted to make sure my mom and dad, I made them proud," Cunningham said. "I wanted to make sure my grandma was proud and that I represent my family well, and anything that I've done...I was shocked...to be seen."

The award included a cash prize of $25,000 that the recipients can use however they choose.

County Invites Community to DCo Thrives Launch and Film Screening Event

The community is invited to the kick-off event for Durham County Government's guaranteed income pilot program, DCo Thrives. The public is invited to the free screening of the award-winning documentary, It’s Basic, on Monday, November 20 at 5 p.m. Following the screening, a roundtable discussion moderated by County Manager Dr. Kimberly J. Sowell will feature program administrators, guaranteed income recipients, and Mayor Pro Temp Mark-Anthony Middleton. Chair Brenda Howerton and Commissioner Nida Allam, both instrumental to the national movement supporting Counties for a Guaranteed Income, will also give remarks.
