We have been reflecting on how grateful we are for the recent generosity we've received from our community to fulfill BEC's mission. Our sincerest gratitude goes to those who have contributed by donating on #GivingTuesday, renewing their BEC memberships, and becoming BEC Angels in recent months. This support has shown us how much Butte County believes in our efforts and fuels our impact moving forward.

. BEC working committees are comprised of active board members and current BEC members and angels. Committees work with BEC staff to increase the scope of impact and consistent environmental news on issues affecting Butte County land, air, and water. Consider joining this committee to help BEC protect and defend our shared natural resources. Together, we can do so much more!

A Holiday Message for the Environment from High School Student Neil Bajaj

As the holidays approach, we all are preparing with gifts, joy, and food, sometimes to excess. Food wastage is an issue during the holiday season because according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, approximately 1/3 of food produced for humans globally is either lost or wasted. So, we all need to do our part in limiting the food we waste by buying less, making more, and composting. A simple way that has worked for me has been using old fruit, that is often mushy and sticky, and putting it in a blender with a liquid of your choice (milk, almond milk, etc.) to make a creamy delicious drink. Other options include using old bananas or fruit to make bread. Cooking with Family especially during holidays is a wonderful way to spend time.
We can all come up with a creative way to avoid food wastage because food wastage's carbon footprint is estimated at 3.3 billion tons of CO2 equivalent of GHG released into the atmosphere per year. If you have unopened can foods that are close to expiration, and that you do not plan on using soon, I sincerely recommend donating them to the local charity of your choice to help those in need. If the food has gone completely bad, however, I recommend using a blender to mix water and the rotten produce, creating a fertilizer.
We, the citizens of Chico must not only enjoy ourselves during these happy times but also look to preserve our environment while we do so. Happy holidays everyone. - Neil
