Dear Friends and Supporters
Going back to school this year is going to be anything but normal, which is why I want to share an uplifting story and to ask for your support for our intergenerational literacy program.

Literacy coach Gonca (pictured below), has been meeting virtually with one of her second graders, Michael. According to Gonca, Michael struggles to sit still and focus during sessions, and his interest in learning to read has declined in the uncertain times of COVID-19.

But Gonca continues to find ways to keep Michael interested in reading. For example, he loves to chat with her about things in his life, like why his swimming goggles are too tight, or what his favorite popsicle flavor is.
“We have the ability to make a positive impact on young students. For that, we should count ourselves fortunate.” -Gonca Sonmez-Poole
“You have to understand that they are children. It is important to have moments of silliness in order to keep it fun and keep them engaged,” says Gonca. Because of this, Michael always comes eagerly to the next session and their time together has prevented him from falling behind during the summer.

There are thousands of students like Michael in Greater Boston who need the support and encouragement of a caring literacy coach like Gonca on their journey to be better readers.

This is why we are asking you to donate today to spark a love of reading in a child like Michael.
Every dollar you give will be doubled if you join us by October 30. Help us raise an additional $10,000 in matching funds!
As COVID-19 safety concerns persist, we are leveraging our partnerships across Boston and across the nation to deliver our program virtually this fall. The virtual program will be highly flexible and adaptable, offering students support whether they are fully remote, in-person, or on a staggered schedule. By working together with teachers and families, our volunteer literacy coaches will still be able to support students in their reading skills, provide them encouragement, and give them the opportunity to spend more time learning with a trusted and caring adult.

Thank you for your support and for investing in the future of our students so that they can realize their potential and gain the literacy skills needed for lifelong success.

With Gratitude,
Wes Enicks,
Executive Director
