Travel is different for everyone. We are inspired to travel by different things, choose different ideal destinations, prefer different modes of travel and lengths of stay, etc. It’s a very personal experience. And it’s gotten even more individualized in recent years. Since the pandemic, we’ve seen the increased popularity of QR code use, solo travel, entertainment-sparked vacations, incentive travel, traveling with pets, and more.
One popular new travel term is “set-jetting”: planning trips inspired by TV shows and movies. According to Expedia's Unpack '24 Trend Report, "more than half of travelers say they've researched or booked a trip to a destination after seeing it on a TV show or in a movie."
Here are some other new popular travel catchphrases:
Pay-cation: working from a vacation destination
Bleisure: mixing business and leisure travel
Dupes: more affordable alternatives to popular products
Tour Tourism: traveling to see a live music performance
In its 2024 Travel Predictions report, Booking.com states that "travel isn’t just an escape, but a catalyst for experiencing our best lives. … Travelers appreciate eco-friendly options and, even more so, app rewards for making sustainable decisions (60%). Authenticity is key, with 47% eager to connect with locals in less-traveled areas and 44% venturing into less touristy spots."
