ANNOUNCEMENTS
ONE CHIP CHALLENGE

When students ingest anything spicy or with capsaicin, make sure they wash their hands and drink small sips of milk.

They need to wash their hands so that the spice/capsaicin does not irritate their skin or they don’t put it in their eyes. They need to drink small sips of milk – water is not recommended because it can just spread the capsaicin around in their mouth and throat.

Child Tax Credit. Deadline is November 15, 2022.

Families with no income or low income could get at least $3,000 per child with the Child Tax Credit, plus $1,400 with the third stimulus payment - even if they have never filed taxes before and if they have not filed taxes this year. It is estimated that more than 33,000 children in Minnesota could miss out on this money if their parent/guardian has not filed.

There is an easy form for people to file on their mobile devices in 15 minutes or less at:  getctc.org

READY Set FAFSA

Free college and financial aid events are available to Minnesota students and families via Zoom. The series, running Tuesday evenings September 27 through October 25, will cover general college and financial aid information, details on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the Minnesota Dream Act for undocumented students, and other ways to pay for college.

Students who attend any of the sessions will be entered into a drawing to win a $500 scholarship (one entry per session attended) awarded by ECMC The College Place Minnesota.

All sessions are at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday nights and will last approximately 45-60 minutes. Participants can ask questions in the chat. Participants can attend any number of sessions (choose dates during registration). Suggested audience is 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students and their parent(s)/guardian(s).

• October 18: Apply for Financial Aid | 12th grade students
• October 25: Search for Scholarships | 10-12th grade students

All sessions will have simultaneous interpretation in Spanish, Somali and Hmong. In addition, there will be financial aid professionals during each session who can answer questions in the chat in Spanish, Somali and Hmong if needed. Presentations will be recorded.
Lake Street Works

Lake Street Works is a 12-month trades and life skills after school workforce development program for low-income 11th and 12th grade students in South Minneapolis. The program is hands-on, offers a paid-stipend, and focuses on soft skills training in addition to introducing participants to carpentry, electrical, plumbing and HVAC industries.

Students attend classes 2 nights a week from 5 PM to 8 PM.
The evening starts with a meal, then training in construction and life skills.
Students are paid $30 per class. The payments are deposited into students’ debit accounts monthly. (LSW helps set up debit accounts for each student.)
The program starts July 11 and goes through June 15, 2023.
High School Seniors graduate from Lake Street Works in June 2023 and can qualify for a paid internship with a contractor or receive a scholarship to go to Dunwoody Technical College.
High School Juniors continue in LSW until June 15 of 2024.
By learning at Lake Street Works this summer, students can earn approximately $420 in stipends and $210 in an investment account. During the year they can learn and earn even more!

Students (and their parents) should complete the following online application and their recruiter will follow-up with you. All students and their parents will be interviewed prior to being accepted to the program to assess the students’ interest and commitment to learning skills in the construction trades. Here is how you apply.
Please check the CCC Google Site and the RHS Counseling Website for more resources and information about upcoming deadlines and events!
