Fall is fast approaching and you know what that means. More squash talk! In this case, the talk will be about that winter squash we all know and love - the pumpkin! As I wrote last Friday, pumpkin engraving is underway, and we only have a short window of opportunity to etch a message or image. Each year, we wait until the pumpkins have reached just the right color green, indicating that the skin is no longer soft but thick enough to endure a little injury. Then by scraping the surface (not too deep!), you can scratch a message into the surface of the pumpkin. As the pumpkin continues to mature, the scratched area will harden and scar over, creating a lasting impression. Pumpkin engraving can be carried out on other squash as well. They key is to use a winter squash that has a thicker skin. If you end up penetrating into the flesh of the pumpkin (or squash), well then, oops, everything will go to rot! On some squash, like the orange kabocha squash, the scarring on the engraved area will be raised, creating a multidimensional appearance. Very cool! (We only offer engraving on pumpkins - just so you know, but if you are growing kabocha at home...go for it!) After engraving, it's just a waiting game until the pumpkins orange up, and the plants die back, providing us with a treat for Halloween. So don't wait! This etching period only lasts a maximum of two weeks. Now's the time! Let the engraving begin!
What's on the back of the farm truck? Lots of baby broccoli! Lettuce looks nice with plenty of salad toppings too: tomatoes, fennel (yep! cut it up thin and add to your salad), radishes, scallions...but we might be short on cucumbers. Lots of leeks and beautiful bok choy will grace the stand shelves. We also have lots of tomato options right now - cherry tomatoes, big beef, roma, and even heirloom beauties from Ben Walther Produce. The basil is looking fabulous, so maybe bruschetta is in your future! We'll also have carrots and celery, potatoes and onions, and lotsa, lotsa herbs! More peaches and apples Tuesday, but we'll soon be turning the corner to more apples, fewer peaches. Pears continue! Berries continue too! Strawberries, raspberries and blackberries until they run out. Another delivery of mello gold grapefruit came in, and we'll have more Murcott mandarins. Note that the wet spring caused some damage to the exterior of the Murcotts, but the insides are as good as ever! We look forward to seeing you at the farm!
