The Diocese of Leeds is delighted to have secured £3.9 million from the Church of England for Barnabas: Encouraging Confidence. The Barnabas programme offers our churches resources and support at different levels, and is how we all work towards the diocesan vision of ‘Confident Christians, Growing Churches, Transforming Communities’. As part of Barnabas: Encouraging Confidence, the Diocese of Leeds has been awarded nearly £1 million by the Church of England for a new project: Every Good Work in Wakefield. Every Good Work holds a broader vision for the city as it seeks to support three churches to disciple young people, develop youth leadership and social action, and establish an interns hub. One of the priorities for Barnabas: Encouraging Confidence is supporting churches to identify their next steps in mission, and giving them the confidence to take them. Personal Growth and Leadership is a key part of how we will do just that. Personal Growth and Leadership is a non-academic course that gives people the skills and confidence to take on responsibility, bringing clergy and lay people together to encourage and support one another. The Ven Peter Townley, Archdeacon of Pontefract will leave the role he has held for 15 years to become an Assistant Minister in the Diocese of York, it was announced yesterday. Peter will serve the Benefice of Sherburn-in-Elmet with Saxton, Aberford with Micklefield and Ledsham with Fairburn and thanked all those who have worked with him through the years. Read more here

Our Diocesan Interns have been celebrating their successes as their year of serving in churches across the region comes to an end. At a celebration held at St Matt’s in Burley, the Interns came together with their mentors, line managers and other supporters to worship, look back on their year, and be commissioned by the Bishop of Leeds, the Rt Revd Nick Baines. Our support of parishes, the situation in Sudan, the work of the Diocesan Property Team and more were on the agenda of the most recent Diocesan Synod. Synod members met on Zoom on Saturday, July 15 to discuss and debate the work and direction of the diocese. Read more here

The Cranmer Awards are coming to Yorkshire, for the first time in the history of this prestigious competition. The Yorkshire Heat of the Cranmer Awards, an annual competition for children between 11-18 years old, will take place at St Margaret's Church, Ilkley, on Saturday, October 14. Read more here

Team Leeds played their part at General Synod in York recently, participating in debates and discussions as part of a packed agenda. Diocesan representatives took part in proceedings which covered a huge range of topics. Read more here

In a joy-filled service on Sunday, July 9, ten second year students from the Leeds School of Ministry were commissioned by the Warden of Readers, the Ven Bill Braviner. At the service at Holy Trinity Bingley they were welcomed into the parishes across the diocese where they will spend a year serving. Read more here

One of our Ripon churches has been celebrating community and the environment with their Community Garden. On Sunday, July 16 the United Benefice of Leyburn and Bellerby welcomed the Rt Revd Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds, to Bellerby for a service and tour of their Community Garden. Read more here

Churches across the diocese will be able to celebrate and respond to God’s generosity, with a suite of new resources for churches to use to run a Generosity Week. The national and diocesan Generosity Weeks takes place in the Harvest season, running from Sunday, September 24 to Sunday, October 1. Read more here

Now that the new king has been installed, The King's Men are returning to All Saints Church, Kirkby Overblow after an absence of 4 years. There will be a new set of choral scholars but the music is sure to be as inspiring as ever. Tickets can be booked online by emailing kodstickets@gmail.com and requesting the number required. There will be a bar on the night for the purchase of wine, beer, soft drinks as well as tea and coffee.

This is a standalone role, where you will be responsible for developing a new digital strategy and overseeing its implementation. This will involve overseeing the procurement of services, maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders and ensuring effective management of service providers. The Head Verger will lead the Verger team, providing guidance and support to ensure that they are well-equipped to carry out their duties effectively. The Vergers ensure the smooth running and upkeep of the cathedral and are a first point of contact for visitors. They are the public face of the cathedral, directly involved in services, concerts and other events and activities in the cathedral, Chantry Chapel and related spaces in the Treacy Hall and Cathedral Centre.
