The Rt Revd Arun Arora has been consecrated as the new Bishop of Kirkstall. The service took place at York Minster, where Bishop Arun was consecrated alongside the new Bishop of Penrith. Bishop Arun said: “I’m deeply grateful to all those who have contributed to making this such a special day, and for the joy of celebrating Christ as a family.” Find out more here

Representatives of the Diocese of Leeds have put up a good show at General Synod, which concluded in York on Tuesday, July 12. From speaking to leading music, from chairing sessions to winning the quiz, the Leeds contingent has played a full part in proceedings. Find out more here

Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine was condemned by the General Synod. Members backed a call for Christians and people of all faiths to pray for an end to the war in Ukraine and for parishes and dioceses to work towards providing long term refuge and hospitality for people fleeing the war. The Church of England’s General Synod has endorsed the national Environment Working Group’s plan to reach carbon net zero by 2030. The Routemap to Net Zero Carbon by 2030 was published last month, and encourages cathedrals, churches, schools and theological education institutions to make changes to their day-to-day activities to reduce carbon emissions. One of our Leeds curates is looking to make connections across his parish and beyond, with a boundary walk. The Revd Chris Balding, curate in the parish of Wortley and Farnley, will be walking the 21km parish boundary on Thursday, August 18, praying for the parish and those around it. Find out more here

Our Diocesan interns gathered to celebrate their achievements recently, as their year of service ends. 23 interns and their families and supporters came together at St Luke’s Holbeck for an evening of fellowship, fun and food. Find out more here

New gardening projects in churches in our diocese have been helping communities feed their bodies and their spirits. At Christ Church in Skipton, children from the Sunday school are sharing God’s bounty with the help of an innovative scheme that provides fresh, healthy food to the community entirely free of charge. Digital giving is being expanded across the diocese this summer, thanks to new free contactless giving devices being made available to parishes. 70 contactless devices will be given to churches all across the diocese, as part of a nation-wide roll out supported by the Church of England’s National Giving Team. A drumming vicar became the first Anglican Priest in 500 years to “play a gig” within the confines of Kirkstall Abbey when he rocked out with his band Re:Boot. The Revd Rob Denton, Vicar of Calverley, took to a specially-erected stage amidst the historic ruins to become the first clergyman to perform on the site since the reign of Henry VIII. A surprise celebration has taken place for staff at Meeting Point, a charity based at Christ Church, Upper Armley working with refugees and asylum seekers from across Leeds. The afternoon included thanks from local councillors, Steve Appleton (the chair of the charity) and Rachel Reeves, MP for Leeds West. Find out more here

The people of Bowland and Ewecross Deanery celebrated rural life and ministry last weekend, when they gathered for an afternoon in St Alkelda’s, Giggleswick. The well-attended event featured displays from each deanery church that explained who they are, what encouragements they have to share, and what subjects are in their prayers. Find out more here

Dewsbury Minister is pleased to be hosting ‘Threads of Survival’, a collection of quilts and textile art from across England reflecting pandemic life. ‘Threads of Survival’ continues a long tradition of documenting important historical events in quilts and textiles by gathering together textile art from across the country. BBC Radio 4 will be broadcasting two of its flagship programmes live from Wakefield Cathedral. At 5pm the cathedral will host the late afternoon news programme, PM; and at 8pm there will be an opportunity for an audience to quiz an invited panel of politicians and other well-known figures in a live broadcast of Any Questions.
