The Revd Canon Stephen Race, currently Rector of The Benefice of Central Barnsley in the Diocese of Leeds and also Area Dean of Barnsley, has been appointed as the new Bishop of Beverley. Speaking of his upcoming role Fr Stephen said he would strive for positive dialogues within the church and looked forward to serving people across the whole region. Find out more here
The Diocese of Leeds has published a summary of an independent study of historic safeguarding cases carried out as part of the national church’s Past Case Review 2 (PCR2) process. The independent review of files in the Diocese of Leeds was completed successfully at the end of November 2021. Find out more here
A team from St Mary’s Luddenden have been working shoulder to shoulder with our sisters and brothers in Mmazame, Tanzania, as part of a recent trip to one of our link dioceses. The team have been helping with construction projects including replacing the roof of St Mary’s Mmazame, St Mary’s Luddenden’s sister church since 2009. Find out more here
Year 6 pupils from Shipley CE Primary School have turned teachers as they give tours of an exhibition on the life and legacy of Anne Frank to parents, governors, staff from BDAT and the school community recently. Children have been trained with the skills and knowledge to lead presentations on an exhibition in school. Find out more here
How the Green Journey can help churches save money and prepare for the future is the topic of a pair of upcoming webinars. In the two webinars, Kevin Lumley and Craig Hogg from Green Energy Consulting will give a step-by-step guide to the energy markets, government energy price cap and explain the Green Journey package of services. Find out more here
Our Diocesan Interns have been gathering for worship and teaching this week as their first term gets under way. They continue to get stuck into serving in churches across the diocese. We have 19 Interns this year, with 11 based in Leeds and eight in Bradford. Find out more here
The Archbishop of York and the Bishop of Leeds will be at Ripon Cathedral on Sunday, October 16 for the culmination of the cathedral’s 1350th anniversary celebrations. A ledger stone, honouring the cathedral’s founding father St Wilfrid, will be dedicated by Archbishop Stephen at the end of a service. Find out more here
A special holy brew was among a host of ales blessed by one of our beer-loving vicars last weekend at the first ever beer festival to be hosted at St Wilfrid's Calverley. Commenting on the event Revd Rob Denton, Vicar of Calverley, said, "It was a great success – people were in the building who hadn’t been for years, or ever. People reconnected with local friends they hadn’t seen for too long. Find out more here
A retrospective launch for an art installation, called 'The Way up Is Down', took place on Monday, September 26 at Christ Church Upper Armley. In 2021, during the UK’s third national covid-19 lockdown, Hungarian artist Leon Varga was the recipient of a small bursary, awarded to him by the Leeds Church Institute. Find out more here
Members of St Oswald’s Horton-in-Ribblesdale have been celebrating their area as part of an exhibition. Joanna Townley and Audrey Daley shared their wedding gowns with the church congregation as part of the celebrations. The dresses were worn more than sixty years apart and formed part of an exhibition ‘Celebrating Our Community’. Find out more here
Learning how to share the Gospel in a post pandemic world is the subject of a newly published book, written by a retired priest in the Diocese of Leeds. ‘Singing the Lord’s Song in a Strange Land: Reshaping the Church for a Changed World’ is authored by Revd Dr John Marsh, who in recent times has been involved in training readers and pastoral ministers. The Energy Crisis and My Church Energy Bills: How can the Green Journey Help?

In this pair of webinars Green Energy Consulting will give a step-by-step guide to the energy markets, government energy price cap and explain the Green Journey package of services. Jemima Parker, Diocesan Environment Officer, will offer advice on how to reduce energy use in your church this winter and how to start to make long-term changes to bring down both financial and carbon costs.

An opportunity to learn more about Soul Art, a recent book by Shaeron Caton Rose about art and wellbeing. Shaeron and Linda Baines are co-founders of ReCreate, an organisation which offers creative retreats and art and wellbeing courses. It will be held at Shine found at St Stephen's Church, Bradford. ‘Threads through Creation’ is an astonishing, uplifting textile art exhibition by Jacqui Parkinson showing at Ripon Cathedral. The show consists of twelve huge silk panels re-imagining the creation story from the bible. Find out more here
Cities of Culture: What can Faith Communities contribute?

The Leeds Council of Christians and Jews are hosting their Annual Public Lecture in the presence of the Lord Mayor of Leeds and the speaker is the Bishop of Bradford, Rt Revd Dr Toby Howarth. It will be held at the Allerton C of E Primary School in Alwoodley. All are welcome and admission if free.

The Diocese of Leeds is pleased to share its toolkit for churches as part of its strategy for achieving carbon net zero by 2030: Saving Creation. The toolkit invites churches to start on the pathway to carbon net zero by taking six steps towards the goal. Access it here
