News
Twenty-three men and women have begun ministry as deacons in parish churches across the diocese following two packed services held in Wakefield Cathedral. They include a professional opera singer, an education consultant, a newspaper journalist, a primary school headteacher and the first Sudanese woman to be ordained in the Church of England. New priests have been ordained at services across the diocese, starting them off on their next phase of ministry. Services took place on Saturday, June 25, at churches including Halifax Minster, Leeds Minster, Bradford Cathedral, Ripon Cathedral and Wakefield Cathedral. Find out more here
Faithful North, the podcast produced by the Diocese of Leeds, has returned for a second season. Four new episodes, featuring voices from a variety of church backgrounds, are available from popular podcast providers. Find out more here
Cyclists from Bradford Cathedral will be taking part in the second nationwide relay ride on the new Cathedrals Cycle Route that links every one of the 42 Church of England cathedrals. Local cyclists will set off from Bradford Cathedral on Thursday July 14, heading towards York Minster via Leeds Minster, as part of the Cathedrals Cycle Route Relay 2022. Find out more here
How St Mark’s Harrogate are cutting their own energy use and engaging with the town is the subject of a new case study from the Church of England. St Mark’s has featured as part of the Church of England’s ‘Towards Net zero Carbon’ series, showcasing what churches across the country are doing to help reach the target of carbon net zero by 2030. Our Keighley churches have teamed up with the local rugby club to help tackle food poverty in the town. On Sunday, June 26, Managing Director of Keighley Cougars Lisa Gill invited the Revd Mike Cansdale of Keighley Parish to attend the match against Oldham RLFC and run a collection point for the Salvation Army Food Bank and the Good Food Shop. Find out more here
One of our Bradford area churches are bringing prayers into their area with a ‘Rug of Prayers’. Residents in the parish served by Denholme Shared Church have donated old t-shirts which have been cut into strips to weave a rag rug. Find out more here
Churches across our diocese are being encouraged to showcase their history and heritage by taking part in the first ever Yorkshire Churches Day. The Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust, a charity set up to help repair, restore and maintain places of worship, is launching the day in September. Find out more here
Excellence in religious broadcasting was celebrated recently at the Sandford St Martin Awards. The Sandford St Martin Trust looks to promote thought-provoking, distinctive programming that engages with religion of all faiths, ethics or morality, and is chaired by the Bishop of Ripon, the Rt Revd Dr Helen-Ann Hartley. What happens when you want to run a project, but you haven’t got the equipment you need? Or the church wants to start a new group but hasn’t thought about the budget? This session aims to explore some of the aspects of finding funding; a bit of theory, a bit of theology, and then some of the options open to you. Find out more here

This webinar is for all and anyone who cares about combating climate change. Following the publication of the Saving Creation: Six Steps to Carbon Net Zero Church Toolkit, this webinar will start with a scriptural reflection. Ripon Cathedral Choir and St Cecilia Orchestra reveal the glories of music played at Ripon Cathedral over the last 1350 years. Digital giving is being expanded across the diocese this summer, thanks to new free contactless giving devices being made available to parishes. 70 contactless devices will be given to churches all across the diocese, as part of a nation-wide roll out supported by the Church of England’s National Giving Team.
