Downing Street has announced the appointment of the Right Reverend Dr Helen-Ann Hartley, currently Bishop of Ripon, as the next Bishop of Newcastle. Bishop Helen-Ann, who was brought up in the North East, will succeed the Right Reverend Christine Hardman who retired as Bishop of Newcastle in November last year. Find out more here
A new toolkit to help our church buildings function efficiently as Warm Spaces and welcome those struggling with heating bills has been launched by the diocese, led by its faith in action team Wellsprings Together. Across the diocese, our churches are, as always, doing their best to support people in need. Find out more here
How the diocese faces the challenges of the next few months and beyond with faith and confidence was considered at the recent meeting of Diocesan Synod. The Synod met virtually on Saturday, October 15, and looked at topics such as the recent General Synod meeting, Parish Share, and our new ‘Barnabas: Encouraging Confidence’ work. Find out more here
The liberating power of God was the overarching message at the diocese’s 23rd synod, which met online and featured robust debates on subjects including Parish Share and the use of individual Communion cups. The Rt Revd Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds used his Presidential Address to concentrate thoughts on the “big vision” of the diocese, sound in the knowledge of God’s strong and encouraging presence. As Hindu people celebrate Diwali, their festival of light triumphing over darkness, our bishops have sent a message of greeting and goodwill. During Diwali, temples, homes, shops and office buildings are brightly lit and the festival, which commenced on Monday, October 24, typically lasts five days. Prayers for the Democratic Republic of Congo, as part of Black History Month, have taken place at an interfaith event held at Bradford cathedral. The Prayer Vigil, hosted by CRC (Conflict Resolution Centre) Bradford, included a short film screening from Bradford Cathedral's Ecumenical Canon Furaha Mussanzi and prayers for peace and justice. Find out more here
Christians across the diocese are being invited to join in a daily act of prayer for world leaders as they meet at Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt to discuss policies and commitments to avert more climate breakdown. A daily email will be sent out to subscribers during the two weeks of COP27 including a scriptural reflection, theme for the day and pointers to action and hope. Find out more here
St Catherine's seeks to be a place at the very centre of its community, expressing God's love in a number of practical ways. However, due to the cost-of-living crisis St Catherine's has seen an increase in demand for their services, a demand they are struggling to keep up with. They are seeking help from those able to support. Watch the video recorded by the diocese here
After his first few weeks as the Bishop of Kirkstall, the Rt Revd Arun Arora has licenced his first priest for the Leeds Area of the Anglican Diocese of Leeds. The Revd Daniel Miles (pictured centre) has been licenced as the Interim Priest in Charge of the Benefice of Manston, which is situated east of the city centre. Find out more here

Rearranged from earlier this term due to the funeral of her late majesty, this course offers an opportunity to explore this topic with others in a relaxed informal setting. Taking place at St George's Church, Barnsley it is for those involved with leading others in prayer and those who wish to explore this role. Find out more here

Throughout history, we see that when we pray, something happens. However, we know that many people in our churches can struggle to feel confident in getting involved in prayer together. We want to offer an open invite to an online conversation about how we might grow in confidence in prayer. Find out more here

An online two-session introductory course which explores how to have a nurturing and spiritually encouraging conversation with someone. This is for anyone but especially those involved in pastoral care. Find out more here

An opportunity for all Licensed Lay Ministers (Readers) to develop an understanding of, and build confidence in, funeral ministry. This is an event at St Philip's Church, Scholes for any Licensed Lay Ministers who may be called upon to take funerals or are simply interested in exploring funeral ministry. Find out more here

Events across the diocese

Across the city of Bradford there has been a full calendar of events celebrating black heritage and culture and recognising the contributions made to the City and its district. The Bradford Black History Month 2022 Planning Group will be closing the programme with a service of thanksgiving and praise at Bradford Cathedral.
Cities of Culture: What can Faith Communities contribute?

The Leeds Council of Christians and Jews are hosting their Annual Public Lecture in the presence of the Lord Mayor of Leeds and the speaker is the Bishop of Bradford, Rt Revd Dr Toby Howarth. It will be held at the Allerton C of E Primary School in Alwoodley. All are welcome and admission if free.

The next decade will be critical for action on the climate crisis as it drives and exacerbates poverty. The church must call for climate justice now and into the future. In collaboration with the Gaia installation at Holy Trinity Boar Lane, we'll reflect on the beauty and fragility of creation and grapple with the challenges of poverty and the climate crisis. A celebration of worship, inspiration and encouragement at Bradford Cathedral. An evening for anyone who wants to see their church growing. It will be organised by the diocesan Leading your Church into Growth team.

The Rhythm of Life is offering two courses for parishes to run locally, one centred on Creationtide and the other called "Finding your Rhythm". Each contains six or seven sessions and serves as a stepping stone for further engagement with the Rhythm of Life. Find all the resources and details here.
Global action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is imperative and yet individual nations can find it hard to commit to the polices required. Each year COP27 international climate change talks try to bring about this collaboration to protect God’s earth. The Diocese of Leeds is pleased to share its toolkit for churches as part of its strategy for achieving carbon net zero by 2030: Saving Creation. The toolkit invites churches to start on the pathway to carbon net zero by taking six steps towards the goal. Access it here
