The Diocese of Leeds is pleased to announce that the Revd Bill Braviner has been appointed as the next Archdeacon of Halifax. Revd Bill joins us from the Diocese of Durham, where he is currently serving as the Incumbent of St Peter Stockton-on-Tees and St John Elton. Find out more here
As acts of remembrance for those taken by war are held across our diocese, the Bishop of Wakefield, the Rt Revd Tony Robinson and Fr Jonathan Bish, the parish priest of Outwood in Wakefield, have just returned from a special commemoration in France. Find out more here
The Diocese bid a fond farewell to the outgoing Archdeacon of Halifax, Ven Dr Anne Dawtry, at a retirement service on Sunday, October 31 held at Halifax Minster. Around three hundred gathered, giving thanks to Anne for her ten years of faithful service as Archdeacon of Halifax and Warden of Readers. Find out more here
One of our churches in the Leeds area has been awarded their Silver Eco Church award from A Rocha. All Hallows Bardsey have achieved this by moving through the Eco Church survey, which measures how churches look after buildings and land; how they engage with their local community and in global campaigns, and the personal lifestyles of congregations. Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, was celebrated on Thursday, November 4 this year, and our bishops sent a greeting to our Hindu friends, colleagues and communities on this occasion. Read the bishops greeting here
The Good Food Keighley shop was launched in July to help tackle food poverty across the centre of the West Yorkshire town. Based in an Airedale Shopping Centre unit, the project currently welcomes between 40 and 60 users a week who are referred by support agencies and schools. Read more here
As COP26 continues, the diocese wants to help people engage with the environment with the announcement of the 2022 programme for the Leeds Diocesan Eco Book Group. Organiser Christine Jack has written about what the group’s goals are, and what kind of books they read, to encourage people who might be interested to join. Read more here
Refugees in our diocese have been experiencing the wonderful land we live in, thanks to the work of two people from the Huddersfield area. The Revd Simon Crook and his wife Sam, run ACross Country, a charity which uses the outdoors and other activities to encourage personal, social and spiritual growth and recuperation. Read more here
In September 2021, Wakefield Cathedral launched ‘Byrd Song’, a new choir group aimed at giving children aged six to eight a taste of choir-life. Seven-year old Oliver Powell was one of the first children to join the newly-founded choir and he is already hosting ambitions to follow in his brother’s footsteps. Read more here

Call out for Advent events
The Communications Team at the diocese is keen to share what our churches will be doing during Advent and Christmas this year on our website and social media.

If your church has plans, we'd love to hear about them, as we are creating a new Advent section on our website including a table of events from across the region. We've already heard about some Christmas events, such as Ripon Cathedral's Christmas Gift and Food Fair, Carols by Candlelight at Wakefield Cathedral and the NHS Carol Service at Bradford Cathedral.

Living and Learning Online
Thursday, November 11 at 7pm
It will feature seven sessions that you can run in person or online with your deanery, team, parish or fellowship groups. Hayley Matthews, Director of Lay Training will be leading a Diocesan-wide online course for those unable to find a local one. These will run between 7-9pm on Thursday evenings via Zoom. Monday, November 15 at 7pm
A workshop to help your parish think about opportunities to engage with local schools. It will cover a number of possible opportunities, highlighting ways to get started. To register for this session, please email childrenyouth@leeds.anglican.org.
Thursday, November 18 at 7pm
Those involved in the digital side of church, whether that be social media, updating a website or A Church Near You, are invited to come along and explore how online platforms can be used to share the Christian message this Christmas. Find out more here
Wednesday, November 24 at 11am
Wellsprings Together, jointly with Linking Lives, invite you to take part in a short workshop where we will be looking at how churches respond to social isolation. Taking place on Zoom, find out more and register a place here.
Thursday, December 9 at 7pm
A 90 minute course on Zoom to help you learn about disabilities and how we can all be more inclusive in our churches. The session will look at definitions and models of disability, theology, practical tips, and how to help people with invisible disabilities. Find out more here.

With over 40 million people trapped in slavery, how can we help bring change? During the weekend you’ll learn more about modern slavery and the epidemic of violence against people in poverty. It will be lead by Colin & Judith Ashurst. Find out more here

What is the presence of God? How do we come to know it? Is it possible to make sense of our experience in a way that honours both God and science? Canon Dr Mark Powley will share the fruits of ten years of PhD research on the presence of God in worship. Find out more here

The popular annual Christmas Gift and Food Fair welcomes visitors to Ripon Cathedral. This year the fair takes place for the first time over two days from 9.30am to 4.30pm on both days. There will be 95 stalls offering a wide selection of unusual gifts, crafts and local food to help you find the perfect gift. Find out more here

Handel’s Messiah has been a favourite of Yorkshire audiences for many years. Alex Woodrow directs St Peter’s Singers and a stellar lineup of soloists, accompanied by Tom Moore on the Minster’s Harrison organ. St Peter’s Singers are proud to present the first major performance of the work in Leeds since the pandemic started. Find out more here

Churches reacting to COP26 has seen Bishop Toby, Bishop of Bradford, inviting teenagers to advise him on a response, as part of a joint Vocations-Youth resource put together to promote the place of young people in shaping the church. The resource, Calling for Change, consists of games, a video and discussion, and can be found here.
'At the heart of Christmas' is the Church of England’s theme for Advent and Christmas 2021. Local churches all over the country will be welcoming their communities to celebrate and share the good news of Christ’s birth with special services and events, supported by a wide range of national resources and support found here.
The Diocese of Leeds is pleased to share its toolkit for churches as part of its strategy for achieving carbon net zero by 2030: Saving Creation. The toolkit invites churches to start on the pathway to carbon net zero by taking six steps towards the goal. Access it here
The Rhythm of Life is offering two courses for parishes to run locally, one centred on Creationtide and the other called "Finding your Rhythm". Each contains six or seven sessions and serves as a stepping stone for further engagement with the Rhythm of Life. Find all the resources and details here.
