The newly announced next Bishop of Huddersfield, the Revd Canon Smitha Prasadam, spent a busy first day in the diocese on Wednesday, March 8. The announcement of Revd Smitha as the new bishop took place at the Jo Cox More in Common Centre at the University of Huddersfield, where she was introduced to the region by the Bishop of Leeds. Our diocesan interns spent some time learning about why and how we care for God’s creation. The interns gathered at St Mark’s Harrogate on Monday, March 6, to hear from Jemima Parker, Diocesan Environment Officer, learning about how the Church can respond to the climate crisis. Read more here
Thursday, March 23 marks three years since the first national lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic and, as part of a wider national remembrance, Bradford Cathedral will be holding a day of reflection. On that Thursday, visitors to the Cathedral will be able to come to the West End to light a candle, and to leave thoughts, reflections, memories or prayers on one of the ‘trees of remembrance’. People from across Halifax gathered to celebrate the life of Alice Mahon, former MP for Halifax, who died recently. The service was held at Halifax Minster, and attended by some 250 people, including senior political figures. Speakers included Jeremy Corbyn MP; Carol Turner, Vice-Chair of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament; and Holly Lynch MP, current MP for Halifax. Read more here
In response to the cost of living crisis, churches across our diocese have opened their doors to the public as Warm Spaces. One of those churches, doing their best to support people struggling with their rising bills this winter, is St Agnes’ in Burmantofts. Starting in January, the congregation at St Agnes’ opened the doors of their recently refurbished church hall. Read more here
John Bell of the Iona Community headed south to lead a day of joyful singing for more than a hundred keen voices at St Alkelda’s, Giggleswick. Folk from Revd Julie Clarkson's three parishes of Giggleswick, Rathmell with Wigglesworth and Settle, were joined by friends from other local churches and farther afield for "The Big Sing". The Trustees of St Hild College are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Daniel McGinnis as the next Principal of St Hild College. Daniel is currently Vice Principal for St Hild Sheffield, and will take up the role after Mark Powley’s departure at Easter. Before joining St Hild, Daniel led a team in planting a church in Sheffield and launched the Leeds School of Theology. Read more here
Churches across the diocese have been taking advantage of new ways to raise funds, thanks to the successful rollout of the Digital Giving Project. The Project brought some 80 contactless giving devices into the diocese, given for free and allocated to churches who went through the application process. Read more here
Mothering Sunday is coming up, and the Mothers’ Union are asking people to support the perseverance of mothers, grandmothers, aunts and other important female caregivers across the world. On the day MU members will contribute to services by preparing flowers, leading prayers, helping with activities for children and providing other resources. Read more here
World Book Day isn’t just for schools, as the parish of Kildwick, Cononley and Bradley found out this last week. Various books about theology, prayer, vocation and more were available for parishioners to take for free from each of the three churches. Read more here

Living and Learning
20th, 21st and 27th March
The ‘Being With’ course is excellent for enquirers. Over ten weeks the course focuses on the experience of being in community as we explore Christian faith together. A ‘taster’ three session course is planned for March 2023, so you can see how the course runs and whether it will suit your context. Find out more here

The Stewardship team are hosting a Digital Clinic at the Wakefield Episcopal Area office in Thornes Park. Attend in person or via Zoom. Seek advice on buying a contactless device for your church, how to set one up or discuss issues with a current device. Clinics will run on an appointment only basis. St Hild are offering a 10-week Online Short Course on Christian Doctrine for the summer term. This course is a great taster for those who are possibly interested in further theological study. Here is the Eventbrite page where individuals can sign up. Autumn 2023 at the Mirfield Centre
Ever wondered what theology means and how to study it? Need some guidance on how to dig a bit deeper? This introductory course may well be for you. This course is also required before you can apply to train as a Licensed Lay Minister. Find out more here

Easter Celebration - Hope Huddersfield

Hope Huddersfield are hosting an Easter Celebration at Huddersfield Town Hall. They will welcome J John and Gaz Thompson as special guests. This will be evangelistic in focus and a perfect opportunity to invite friends, family and neighbours to hear the good news.

Ian Birkinshaw plays ‘John Mark’ who relates the extraordinary story of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This vivid gospel narrative is underscored throughout by music which captures the shifting mood of the crowds. It will be held at St Paul's Church, Ireland Wood. Book a place here

The Church Organiser, a free room and events management tool which integrates with A Church Near You, is soon to be launched. Come along to one of two free training events at Church House to help your church get set up and learn how it can help. Join Revd John Bavington, vicar of Great Horton and Lidget Green, for a day of exploring the Bible. Attendees will take a deep dive into scripture, learning how it points to the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Book a place here
Pilgrimage at Ripon Cathedral
Saturday, May 13 at 10am
A welcome with light refreshments will be followed by a pilgrimage around the cathedral including a visit to the beautiful and moving crypt. The pilgrimage morning will finish with a Eucharist at 12 noon, leaving the remainder of the day free for you to wander around the cathedral at your leisure and visit the rest of the city.
