News
Churches and cathedrals across the diocese have joined together over recent days to pay their heartfelt respects to Her Late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. During a period of national mourning a mixture of services and events were held. Some brought leaders and people of different faith’s together. Find out more here
It is Generosity Week this week, and churches across the diocese have been experiencing Christian generosity in different ways. One way has been through launching the Parish Giving Scheme (PGS) in parishes. It helps givers donate safely to their church by direct debit either monthly, quarterly, or annually, and helps parishes make their finances more regular. Find out more here
The missional importance of church buildings was a key theme at the Annual DAC Conference 2022 held in Leeds and hosted by our diocese this week. More than 100 representatives from 33 dioceses attended the three-day event, which heard from a range of speakers and included visits to variety of churches across the city. Find out more here
A weekly toddler group in Harrogate, providing a friendly space for parents and their young children, is contributing to the growth of the church. In a newly published video by the Diocese of Leeds, the team at St Peter's Church share how members of their toddler group have gone on to attend Sunday worship and even be baptised. Find out more here
To mark the Jewish celebration of Rosh Hashanah, our Bishops have sent their greetings in a message to our Jewish friends. The marking of their religious New Year involves the traditional eating of treats such as apples dipped in honey, hoping to prompt a sweet and happy year ahead. Find out more here
Helping churches deal with timely issues around energy saving and climate resilience is part of training from our Church Buildings Team this autumn. Alongside sessions on health and safety, the team will be offering training on how to reduce energy usage in churches in the short- and longer-term. Find out more here
The centenary of Temple Newsam House, Leeds being transferred to public ownership has been marked by a special Eucharist service led by Bishop Nick. In 1922, the then Lord Halifax stipulated in the deed of transfer to the City of Leeds that the Grade I listed building should host an annual Eucharist “according to the rites and ceremonies of the Church of England”. Artists with a Leeds connection are being invited to respond to an upcoming display being hosted at Holy Trinity Boar Lane in the city. The ‘Our Earth, Our City' exhibition will be taking place at the church from Monday, November 7 to Sunday, November 27. Find out more here
Bradford Cathedral ‘Safari’ Evensongs
Bradford Cathedral Choir have started visiting parish churches again to sing choral evensong. So-called ‘Safari’ evensongs have been a mainstay of the cathedral choir’s calendar, and they are planning visits for Sundays in 2023 and 2024. If your church would be interested in hosting them, contact Director of Music at Bradford Cathedral, Alex Berry on alex.berry@bradfordcathedral.org.

Living and Learning
Starting Monday, October 3
Through a mixture of live lectures, discussion groups and assigned homework, this course will focus on a Christlike and prophetic response to the interrelated issues of climate breakdown, violence and conflict and racial injustice. The course is a partnership between Leeds School of Theology and Lighthouse West Yorkshire. Find out more here

A day for the whole church to share experiences and learn together. Speakers will include the Bishop of Kirkstall, Liz Morton and the Revd Anthea Colledge. It will be held at St Peter’s Church Centre, Gildersome. The Energy Crisis and My Church Energy Bills: How can the Green Journey Help?
Wednesday, October 19 at 5pm and Thursday, October 20 at 12pm
In this pair of webinars Kevin Lumley and Craig Hogg from Green Energy Consulting will give us a step-by-step guide to the energy markets, government energy price cap and explain the Green Journey package of services. Jemima Parker, Diocesan Environment Officer, will offer advice on how to reduce energy use in your church this winter and how to start to make long-term changes to bring down both financial and carbon costs.

Bolton Priory is hosting a touring piece of artwork by Luke Jerram consisting of a large moon measuring seven metres in diameter. They are also taking the opportunity to promote dialogue between science and religion and have drawn up a programme of lectures and preaching engagements. Find out more here

An opportunity to learn more about Soul Art, a recent book by Shaeron Caton Rose about art and wellbeing. Shaeron and Linda Baines are co-founders of ReCreate, an organisation which offers creative retreats and art and wellbeing courses. It will be held at Shine found at St Stephen's Church, Bradford. Global action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is imperative and yet individual nations can find it hard to commit to the polices required. Each year COP27 international climate change talks try to bring about this collaboration to protect God’s earth. The Diocese of Leeds is pleased to share its toolkit for churches as part of its strategy for achieving carbon net zero by 2030: Saving Creation. The toolkit invites churches to start on the pathway to carbon net zero by taking six steps towards the goal. Access it here

Every Thursday morning, St Peter's Church in Harrogate welcomes families to their weekly toddler group. As well as serving their local community, it is a way of sharing the Good News of Jesus, leading to some attending St Peter's Sunday worship and even getting baptised. Watch the promo here
