Diocese says farewell to Bishop Helen-Ann as she heads for Newcastle The Diocese bade a fond farewell to the Rt Revd Dr Helen-Ann Hartley at a special evensong service at Ripon Cathedral. She has now left her suffragan role of five years as the Bishop of Ripon to take up a new challenge as the diocesan Bishop of Newcastle. Read more here

Hong Kong arrivals welcomed and baptised by Leeds Church New arrivals from Hong Kong continue to be supported and welcomed by St Barnabas’ Church in Alwoodley. Since the announcement in 2021 of the British National Overseas passport scheme, allowing Hong Kong citizens to come and reside in the UK, North Leeds has seen a large number move from Hong Kong. Bishops propose prayers of thanksgiving, dedication and for God’s blessing for same-sex couples Following media reports of the meeting of the College of Bishops to discern a way forward for the Church of England on questions of identity, sexuality and marriage, the National Church issued a response yesterday. Read more here.  The official CofE statement on the latest progress of Living in Love and Faith will be made public tomorrow, Friday, January 20.

Diocesan Interns start 2023 training looking at racial justice Our cohort of Leeds Diocesan Interns have started 2023 with much food for thought as they came together again for weekly Monday training which is designed to equip them for life, work and leadership. Coinciding with Martin Luther King Day, The Rt Revd Arun Arora, Bishop of Kirkstall, led an interactive session on Racial Justice. Read more here

Racial Justice Sunday resources On Sunday, February 12 it is Racial Justice Sunday. Racial Justice Sunday is for all churches to reflect on the importance of racial justice, to give thanks for the gifts and beauty of human diversity, and to commit to end racism and acts of discrimination. Bishop Nick visits Leeds school Bishop Nick has been seeing what goes on in our schools, with a recent visit to Whinmoor St Paul’s in Leeds. Bishop Nick was shown around by four children from the school’s Worship Committee, children from each class who are elected to help the school plan, prepare and deliver daily worship. Read more here

Rowan Williams is first speaker at our Follow Me 2023 events Former Archbishop of Canterbury, the Rt Revd Rowan Williams will begin Follow Me 2023, a series of inspiring talks and events organised by the Rt Revd Tony Robinson, Bishop of Wakefield. Wakefield Cathedral will welcome the noted theologian and writer for his talk entitled Agents of the new creation: bring the world to life, on Thursday, February 9. Read more here

DAC builds capacity with three new members Our Diocesan Advisory Committee is expanding its ability to support parishes with their buildings, with the recent addition of three new members and seven new specialist advisors. Their contribution will assist the DAC and its staff support parishes care for their church buildings in the best way and develop them as centres of mission that serve God’s people. Read more here

Safeguarding Link Persons The Safeguarding Team are looking to recruit “Link persons” from around the Diocese to assist in responding to, assessing and managing safeguarding concerns or allegations made against church officers. The link person may be a senior member of clergy, including retired clergy. Read more here

Parish Disability Representatives Training Saturday, January 21 at 10.30am A morning for new, continuing and those interested in becoming Parish Disability Reps. It will take place online and will include prayer, a Q&A session, group discussion and worship. Find out more here

The Being With course (Online) Starting on Monday, January 23 This new enquirers’ course is open to anyone who seeks a deeper engagement with the person of Christ. This course is a new model of relational and experiential Enquirer’s Course by Sam Wells. Find out more here

Unconscious Bias and Racism Awareness & Intersectionality Training Wednesday, January 25 at 9am A day course at the Trinity Centre in Bingley to explore how to make our churches more inclusive to members of all communities. This course is open to both clergy and laity. Find out more here

Engaging with Families through Seasonal Events Thursday, January 26 at 7pm A Zoom workshop for church leaders and volunteers. Join members of the Children, Young People and Families team as we share and discuss creative ideas around seasonal activities which enable us to engage and build relationships with families. Saving Creation: Six Steps to Carbon Net Zero  Wednesday, February 1 at 5pm This webinar is for All – clergy, Churchwardens, Treasurers, PCC members, Parish Environment Officers and anyone who cares about the combating climate change. It will explore a step by step guide for churches on how and why to start on the journey to net zero. Find out more here

Resourcing Lent and Easter for All Ages Wednesday, February 1 at 7pm An opportunity to share ideas and resources which might support sessions with children, young people and families during Lent and Easter. Engaging with New Housing Wednesday, February 8 at 7pm An opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities of engaging with new housing developments in parishes in the diocese. Holocaust Memorial Day - Civic Remembrance Event Sunday, January 22 at 2pm A Leeds civic event for Holocaust Memorial Day, held at the City Varieties Music Hall. It will be hosted by the Lord Mayor of Leeds and free tickets are available from leedsheritagetheatres.com

Holocaust Memorial Choral Evensong - Bradford Cathedral Sunday, January 22 at 3.30pm All are welcome to join Bradford Cathedral for Choral Evensong, sung by the Cathedral Choir during term time. This is a meditative service in which the congregation participate through their presence and prayerful engagement with the spoken and sung texts. Find out more here

Candlemas - Ripon Cathedral Thursday, February 2 at 7.30pm Join Ripon Cathedral as they celebrate Christ’s Presentation at the Temple with a Ripon tradition – the lighting of over 7,000 candles in a series of glorious displays through the building. Find out more here

Candles in the Dark Sunday, February 5 at 6pm A celebration of worship, inspiration and encouragement at Bradford Cathedral. An evening for anyone who wants to see their church growing. It will be organised by the diocesan Leading your Church into Growth team and will feature guest speaker, Sophie Jelley, the Bishop of Doncaster.

Church Army Discovery Events Do you have a passion for seeing people come to know Christ? How about considering Church Army? They are a Mission Community as well as a trainer and employer of Pioneer Evangelists across the UK and Ireland. They host a series of Discovery Events throughout the year and their next ones are listed here.

Company of Servers Eucharist Saturday, March 11 at 10.30am The Company of Servers Diocese of Leeds Chapter are holding their Spring Eucharist on Saturday, March 11. A Warm Welcome from St Paul's in Leeds In response to the cost of living crisis, churches across our diocese have begun to open their doors to the public as Warm Spaces. One of those churches is St Paul’s Ireland Wood who have set up a weekly space on a Monday teatime called Warm Welcome. Watch the video here
