People from across the diocese braved the weekend weather to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee over the recent bank holiday. Churches gathered for parties and services in all areas of the diocese, with food, drink, music and more, all to celebrate the Queen’s 70 years of committed service to the country, service inspired by her strong Christian faith. Revd Canon Arun Arora will take up the role of Bishop for the Leeds Episcopal Area after five years as Vicar of St Nicholas Church in the heart of Durham City. The appointment is a return to Yorkshire, where he served his curacy at St Mark’s Church in Harrogate. Find out more here

Bradford deserves to celebrate after being named the UK's City of Culture for 2025, says Bishop of Bradford, Toby Howarth. “This is fantastic news for a city that is so rich in culture, communities and above all, in its people,” Bishop Toby said after the decision was announced on the BBC’s One Show by Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries. The Diocese of Leeds Church Building Grants and Loan Scheme is now open for 2022 applications. The scheme supports churches with maintaining and improving their church buildings so they can better serve and minister to their local communities. Find out more here

Father Darren Percival, parish priest of St Hilda’s, Cross Green and St Saviour’s, Richmond Hill, Leeds, has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to the community. It is recognition for his work during Covid restrictions ensuring that the Church’s work did not stop. Find out more here

Christian support for mariners at a time of international conflict is the focus of this year’s Sea Sunday on July 10. It comes as seafarers face a second acute crisis, supplementing the intense difficulties they have faced during the pandemic, writes Revd Canon Andrew Wright, Secretary General of the Church of England’s Mission to Seafarers. More than a hundred people of different ages and nationalities turned out for an open-air service in Cliffe Castle Park on Sunday, June 5. As part of the Jubilee celebrations, Keighley Parish decided to take their worship out in the park. Find out more here

Farsi speaking asylum seekers and university students were among those baptised recently at two joyous services, held at St George's Church in the centre of Leeds. In total twenty three baptisms and one affirmation of baptism by full immersion took place on Sunday, May 15, during St George's morning and evening services. Find out more here

The Rt Revd Dr Helen-Ann Hartley, Bishop of Ripon, has been talking recently about the inspirational woman who got her to take up percussion playing, as part of a series on BBC Radio York. As her remarkable woman, Bishop Helen-Ann chose Dame Evelyn Glennie, Scottish percussionist and trailblazer for differently abled musicians as she is deaf. Find out more here

The pipe organ of Ripon Cathedral is revealed in all its glory this month, with a Summer Organ Festival, showcasing what it can do and premiering a specially commissioned animation telling the cathedral’s 1350-year-old story. Find out more here
