The Church of England’s General Synod met last week to discuss and debate important issues including slavery, the persecuted church, our path forward towards carbon net zero, church governance and more. The Diocese of Leeds had a full complement of representatives, and we have asked some of them to reflect on their experiences of the week. Read more here

Church leaders in the Harrogate district are supporting plans for a mosque in the town with a new joint statement. Twenty-two leaders have signed the letter backing the scheme, saying the “time is right” for a place of worship for Muslims. Signatories include several priests from Anglican churches in the area, and the Bishop of Ripon. Read more here

Mission and ministry across post-industrial Yorkshire is the focus of an up and coming event for church leaders. Taking place on Saturday, March 5 at Wakefield Cathedral, the day will include input from a number of speakers, including the Revd Jude Smith, the Revd Canon Peter Farley-Moore and the Bishop of Wakefield, the Rt Revd Tony Robinson. New arrivals from Hong Kong joined with more than 100 locals from St Barnabas’ Alwoodley, Leeds to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Welcoming the Year of the Tiger, the church was decorated with fai chun (traditional red decorations) and everybody brought Chinese food to share. Read more here

Bradford Cathedral have hosted a successful Cathedral Sing event recently, helping children from across the city to experience the joy of singing in a church choir. The workshop, held on Saturday, February 12, included working on singing technique, with the children practising singing rounds and how to sing in harmony. Read more here

New changes to church legislation designed to help churches reach carbon net zero have been approved by General Synod, meeting this week. Changes to the faculty jurisdiction rules - the Church’s equivalent of planning law - were voted through on Wednesday, February 9. Read more here

Parish Environment Officers in the Aire and Worth Deanery have recently been commissioned to help their churches reach our target of carbon net zero by 2030. It took place at a well-attended meeting of the Aire and Worth Deanery Synod. Read more here

A motion at General Synod introduced by the Rt Revd Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds, on a report from the national Governance Review Group has passed at the most recent Synod meeting. The motion follows a report put together by the Governance Review Group, chaired by Bishop Nick. Read more here

This Lent, Christians across the diocese are invited to explore how we live the gospel in our daily lives, with our upcoming Rhythm of Life course and retreats. With a Lenten focus, each week will provide an opportunity to learn more about how we can provide structure to our lives in seven key areas: praying, reflecting, encouraging, sharing, resting, celebrating and creating. St Mary’s Barnsley is celebrating 200 years since it was rebuilt in its current form, and as part of the festivities they are hosting a ‘Weddings Through the Ages’ festival. The festival will explore the history of marriage at the church over the centuries. Find out more here

A service to remember the former Archdeacon of Leeds John Oliver’s life and ministry will be held at Leeds Minster on Sunday, April 3 at 2.30pm. It will be led by Bishop John Packer. Anne and the family invite all those who knew and worked with John to this service. |

The Rhythm of Life is offering a Lent course for parishes to run locally. With a Lenten focus, each weekly session will concentrate on one of the seven Rhythm of Life areas. It can be delivered in parishes/cathedrals on Zoom or face-to-face (using the available leaders guide, and video/audio clips). As an alternative to parish-based courses, individuals can join a diocesan-run Zoom-based option. Find out more here. |
