The Very Revd Andy Bowerman has become the new Dean of Bradford, following his installation held at Bradford Cathedral on Sunday, June 19. The service saw the Rt Revd Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds, lead the service alongside the Deans of Ripon and Wakefield Cathedrals and the residentiary clergy of Bradford Cathedral. Find out more here
Communicating with our parishes on how best to support church growth was high on the agenda when Diocesan Synod met in person at St George’s, Leeds. Bishop Nick welcomed clergy and lay members and in his Presidential Address he listed the pressing issues that face the world, and the church, in this time of political, social and humanitarian challenges. Digital giving is being expanded across the diocese this summer, thanks to new free contactless giving devices being made available to parishes. 70 contactless devices will be given to churches all across the diocese, as part of a nation-wide roll out supported by the Church of England’s National Giving Team. The diocese is getting ready to welcome this year’s class of deacons, with ordinations happening at Wakefield Cathedral on Saturday, July 2. 23 new deacons will begin their ordained ministry on the day, serving as curates in churches across all five areas of the diocese. Find out more here
Diocesan interns have been learning about the care for those most in need at the heart of one of the most deprived areas in the country. New Wine Discipleship Year students and Ministry Experience Scheme participants spent four days at St Stephen’s Church in Bradford, immersing themselves in some of the many outreach and mission activities led by the team. Find out more here
The Rt Revd Toby Howarth, Bishop of Bradford, has written a letter to Michael Gove MP, the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, expressing his concern at the removal of Imam Qari Asim from his roles as Independent Advisor to the Government and Deputy Chair of the Government’s Anti-Muslim Hatred Working Group. A church project is helping families across Pudsey save money and the environment by recycling clothes for children. ‘Reduce Reuse Kids’ Clothes’ is part of the Pudsey Community project, launched by Pudsey Parish Church at the start of the first lockdown in 2020. Find out more here
With just over a month to go, all churches in the diocese are being encouraged to fill in the Energy Footprint Tool. The Archdeacon of Halifax, the Venerable Bill Braviner, has written about how we should work out how ‘lightly we tread’, so we can work towards carbon net zero by 2030. Find out more here
Reducing food waste and poverty, the Harrogate Clothes Bank, solar panels, Car Free Sundays, renewable power sources and a redevelopment of the church garden are just part of St Mark’s Harrogate’s journey towards achieving their Silver Eco Church award this month. Find out more here
One of our priests and her daughter have recently featured on BBC2’s Yorkshire Midwives on Call. The Revd Lucy Wormsley, Vicar of Wyke, and her husband welcomed their daughter with a home water birth, all filmed for the BBC2 programme that aims to show the work of dedicated midwives who are on call for expectant mums in Bradford. A former Tanzania Diocesan Link officer is hoping to walk a mile for each of her years to support school children in the country. Peta Moffat is walking 75 miles for her 75th Birthday on the Wakefield Way, looking to raise some £2500 for Issenye School, Tanzania, for the provision of electricity and safe water to the school. Clergy and lay people from the Ripon area joined a gathering of folk from across the Northern dioceses for 36 hours of conversation and sharing at The Sill by Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland. The ‘Small, Faithful, Rural’ conference was originally planned for 2020 and had been twice postponed due to the pandemic. Find out more here

A webinar for all and anyone who cares about combating climate change. Following the publication of the Saving Creation: Six Steps to Carbon Net Zero Church Toolkit, this webinar will start with a scriptural reflection to aid understanding of the gospel response to climate change. Practical steps that a church can take to work towards becoming carbon net zero will then be explored. Find out more here

This webinar is an opportunity to consider the importance of intergenerational worship and prayer for the whole church. The session will cover: why intergenerational worship and prayer is significant in the life of the church, examples of good practice, how children and young people might be nurtured in their approach to prayer. A day for clergy and church leaders to share ideas and advice on growing a generous church. Join the stewardship team at the Trinity Centre, Bingley to explore topics related to giving, such as encouraging generosity, giving mechanisms including digital and online giving, the PGS, grants and general finance advice and treasurer support. This one and a half hour session will help you understand more about lay assistance in Eucharistic worship. It is open to those with the Bishop's permission to assist in the administering of the elements during Holy Communion. Find out more here

What's the point of poetry in such a precarious world, and at a time when so much we value is being threatened? Join Canon Mark Oakley and poet/author Diane Pacitti as they discuss the importance of poetry at this 'pay as you feel' event in conjunction with the Bradford Literature Festival. Find out more here

Thousands of visitors will be flocking to the picturesque village of Cawthorne in South Yorkshire for the Open Gardens event. This popular biennial attraction is being held for the thirteenth time and 15 gardens will be open from 11am to 5pm each day. Find out more here

Mandy Marshall, founder of 'Restored' charity, is speaking at All Hallows Church, Bardsey. She will address some of the issues around Domestic Violence and what local communities can do to help. Churches across our diocese are being encouraged to showcase their history and heritage by taking part in the first ever Yorkshire Churches Day. The Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust, a charity set up to help repair, restore and maintain places of worship, is launching the day in September. Find out more here
