A joint project to boost high quality education in rural settings has been launched by the Church of England, education charity Teach First and the Chartered College of Teaching. The new Rural Teaching Partnership will run in ten pilot regions across England including the Diocese of Leeds. Read more here
A steering group to help people across the diocese engage with Living in Love and Faith resources has now been established. Guided by the Bishop of Ripon, its members are the Archdeacon of Bradford, diocesan board member Marilyn Banister, diocesan Officer for Disability and Inclusion, Katherine-Alice Grasham, Sarah Hobbs, of the Ripon Cathedral community and Bradford curate, Derek Jones. To bring comfort and joy this Christmas, Christian leaders in Wakefield are sending 65,000 cards to households across the city in a unique initiative. Designed with a Covid theme, the card is part of a larger multi-channel communication designed to lift the spirits of those in the city. Read more here
Supporting your local church is going to get easier, as the Diocese of Leeds is taking part in a national pilot scheme for online giving. The scheme is looking to pioneer a new way of engaging with the Parish Giving Scheme, which launched in our diocese last year, by offering new ways to set up regular giving online. Read more here
Across Our Region
Volunteers from St Stephen’s church, Bowling, are celebrating after winning the Marsh Church and Community Heroes Awards 2020. The first prize of £1,000 was presented at the National Churches Trust’s Local Treasures event, held on Friday 11 December 2020. Read more here
One of our parishes in Wakefield has come up with a creative new way of sharing the life of their churches with people in the area. The Parish of Sandal Magna have recently installed a new digital noticeboard, with the aim of promoting all the different things happening at the church. Harrogate will be lit up this season with hope and joy, thanks to new trails from churches in the area. #thelightshines is a new project from churches in Harrogate looking to flood the town with light, hope and love, by encouraging everyone to decorate one of their windows and display them in the dark nights of Advent. Amidst the darkness of Covid and the long winter nights, St Paul's Church in Morley are bringing light to their town this Christmas. Light in the Darkness is the name of their new campaign, encouraging everyone to display extra outdoor lights throughout the winter months as a way of bringing hope and the message of Jesus. The Parish of Bardsey with East Keswick has been awarded a Lord Mayor’s Certificate of Appreciation, as recognition for their community engagement with St Aidan’s FoodShare. The Leeds parish have supported St Aiden’s ministry to work with the hungry and homeless by regularly delivering food. A Bradford charity based at one of our churches is looking to spread festive cheer to those who need it with ‘Christmas in a Box’. Shine, based at St Stephen’s West Bowling, have put together a selection of Christmas craft and cooking activities to help get people excited about the season. Read more here
St George’s Crypt have launched a new video looking at the great work they are doing this Christmas. The Crypt, which has been celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, is sharing their plans for the season, which include wholesome warm meals, clean clothes and, most importantly, making sure no one feels isolated this Christmas. Events and Training
Join Bradford Cathedral at 4pm on Christmas Eve for a special online crib service, premiering on YouTube and Facebook. Filmed in Bradford Cathedral's beautiful outdoor crib, the short service will include readings, music, a talk, a blessing and more.
Christmas is different at Ripon Cathedral this year because of COVID-19 but there are still plenty of familiar services and new experiences to enjoy. To help people get into the spirit of Christmas, there will be four services of lessons and carols at 5.30pm on December 19, 20, 23 and 24. The service on December 23 will be live streamed on YouTube. Wakefield Cathedral's Crib Service will be online this year. Taking place at 11am on Wednesday, December 23, participants are encouraged to dress up and decorate their Zoom backgrounds. To book your place and find out more follow the link here.
The Introduction to Theology 12 session course offers an opportunity to reflect upon the Christian faith and deepen your own personal journey. This course will run across three study days online, with a Sunday study day (9.00am-4.00pm) each month from January to March 2021. Find out more here

A special Christmas film featuring various groups from the City of Bradford has now been launched. It features a host of individuals, groups and places including: the Rt Revd Toby Howarth (Bishop of Bradford), City of Bradford Brass Band, Bradford Cathedral Choir, Doreen Lee (Lord Mayor of Bradford), the Khidmat Centre, a Persian asylum seeker from the Sharakat Project, Churches Together in Burley-in-Wharfedale and a farming family on Addingham Moorside. Each part can be downloaded to be used in your local church service. Find out more here
Living in Love and Faith (LLF), The Church of England’s landmark set of resources on questions of identity and which draws together the Bible, theology, science and history with powerful real-life stories has now been published. The product of three years’ work, led by the Bishop of Coventry, includes a 480-page book, a series of films and podcasts, a course and an online library of other publications. Find out more here

A collection of advent resources and ideas can now be found on a designated part of our website. Our Advent 2020 section will also include a collection of Christmas music from some of our churches and offer a gallery of nativity scenes sent in from people across the diocese. Parish Buying have launched their new Contactless Giving Kits. They are a complete all-in-one solution for giving contactlessly to church. Previously, churches were required to source their tablet, contactless device and stand and wires all separately but now they can purchase the whole thing in one go. The solutions can be viewed on Parish Buying here.
