News
New grants to boost mission in our communities by improving our church buildings have been announced by the diocese. The five-year Church Buildings Grants scheme is backed by a number of restricted funds, which are available exclusively for this purpose. Read more here
Experiences of parish worship during the pandemic and how we may emerge with sustained engagement and fresh learning were the main topics at the March online Synod. Diocesan Secretary Jonathan Wood gave a presentation on how our churches and worshippers have addressed the challenges of the last 12 months. Read more here
Be freshly faithful and use insights gained during the pandemic to build worship as we work confidently towards a shared future, Bishop Nick has urged Synod. In his Presidential Address, Bishop Nick firstly referenced the travails of Jonah, Moses and Jeremiah as examples of how journeys are always accompanied by God. Read more here
The diocese is delighted to welcome Revd Jude Smith as its first Director of Church Revitalisation. Jude is currently Team Rector in the Moor Allerton and Shadwell Team in North Leeds and served her curacy in South Leeds, working across Beeston and Holbeck, and led in the outer estate of Hawksworth Wood as Team Vicar and Pioneer Minister. Read more here
A forum for our Readers and Licensed Lay Ministers takes place later this month with a keynote speech by Bishop Nick and break-out sessions where people can share valuable knowledge about their work and service. This year sees the quinquennial renewal of licences for all Readers and Licensed Lay Ministers and in preparation for this there is a “get-together" via Zoom on Saturday, March 2. Read more here
Skilled and eager volunteers who are keen to help parishes thrive are wanted by two of the diocese’s most important committees. The Finance, Assets and Investments Committee (‘FAIC’) and the Property Committee are both currently seeking new members. Read more here
Our Children, Young People and Families Team are looking to support folk this Lent with new Holy Week and Easter resources. The resources, part of our Rhythm of Life venture, have been gathered by our team from a variety of sources, and have options for children of all ages. Read more here
The Bishop of Huddersfield has been speaking about safeguarding in the Church of England, and how we are improving our response after past failings. In an interview with the Yorkshire Post, Bishop Jonathan spoke about how we are making a commitment to improving the protection and care of those who are vulnerable, and how we are making sure all are treated with compassion, dignity and love. Read more here
Church leaders with a desire to see their communities flourish are encouraged to join one of three newly created Growth Groups, designed to create a space for mutual learning, encouragement, sharing and prayer. Churches growing spiritually, numerically and in their mission to share the Gospel is at the heart of the vision and strategy for the Diocese of Leeds. Read more here
The Lord Mayor of Leeds Online Thank You Awards has honoured a church led project in the Parish of Pudsey for its caring response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Pudsey Community Project, launched by the parish church in March 2020, coordinates local volunteer responses across the town and surrounding area, especially for people who are isolated, quarantined or anxious. Read more here
On Mothering Sunday one of our priests shared her powerful testimony of motherhood as part of the Church of England’s national online service.
The Revd Charlotte Cheshire, Priest in Charge at Christ Church Moldgreen & St James Rawthorpe, offered the story of her and her son Adam to help illustrate how complicated mothering can be. Read more here
Halifax Minster have been celebrating, as building work on their roof gets underway. The Minster has managed to secure a £124,000 grant from the government for vital repairs, and now the scaffolding is up, and work has begun, with the aim of completion by June. Read more here

Living and Learning Online
The PGS has launched its new digital service, offering donors a way of setting up regular giving via the PGS website. To explore how this new service can benefit your parish you're warmly invited to join a PGS Goes Digital Zoom meeting, running on Monday, March 22 and Monday, March 29. This 2 hour session will take place on Saturday, March 20 at 10am and will look at definitions and models of disability, theology, practical tips, and how to help people with invisible disabilities. You're invited to read and explore eco fiction and works of environmental non-fiction and their relationship with Christianity in a world which recognises the interconnected nature of God and the world in which we live. The next meeting will explore A Life On Our Planet by David Attenborough and be held on Tuesday, March 23 from 7.15pm via a Zoom. Find out more here

Every quarter you can come together with others who are working out what God’s call means to them. The Fellowship will be joined by the Diocesan Director of Ordinands and Vocations Revd Canon Derek Walmsley. The aim of the session is to discuss the important changes to the new Discernment Process, which comes into effect in autumn 2021. Events across the diocese
The Diocese is hosting a "A Journey Through Lent" in the coming weeks, offering people the opportunity to join for Midday Prayer and Lenten Reflections. The opportunity is open to all, with Zoom sessions taking place every Friday at 12:00, with the first session taking place tomorrow and running through to the final session on Friday, March 26. Find out more here
Bradford Cathedral has put together an Easter Service video for families, premiering on Easter Day at 5pm, featuring dramatisations, readings and images of the key events of Holy Week, with music and worship. Pre-service resources are available here.
On Good Friday at 12 noon and 3pm the Wintershall's Passion of Jesus Play will be live streamed on Facebook. Sadly the play that is normally performed live from Trafalgar Square is unable to take place this year. However, the recording from 2019 will be made available on Facebook here.
Spring Harvest Home is back for 2021, taking place from Sunday, April 4 to Thursday, April 8. If you're struggling with mental health, caring for someone who is or are just interested in learning more then you might be interested in The Cellar Trust Skills for Being Well in Adversity Course. This is a free, 6 week course held entirely on zoom which aims to help people improve their understanding of mental health through information, sharing experiences and activities. Following the success of 'Mr Emporium's Gift Shop' nativity video, St George's Leeds are producing a sequel for Easter. This time they will unpack the story of Easter through 'Mr Emporium's Easter Experiments'. The free resource for schools and churches will be available on Monday, March 22. Find out more here.

Living in Love and Faith (LLF), The Church of England’s landmark set of resources on questions of identity and which draws together the Bible, theology, science and history with powerful real-life stories has now been published. The product of three years’ work, led by the Bishop of Coventry, includes a 480-page book, a series of films and podcasts, a course and an online library of other publications. Find out more here

The Parish Giving Scheme is an established planned giving scheme for churches that was launched across the Diocese of Leeds in January 2020. Here is a short testimony from Wendy, Treasurer and Church Warden at Wortley and Farnley, who explains how the PGS has helped them. Generosity is at the heart of our faith, we believe in a generous God and our own generosity is a testament and hallmark of our faith in action. The ministry and mission of The Church of England is largely funded through the incredible generosity of those who give to it.
