Our diocese will engage in a range of exciting ways with the Church of England’s long-awaited Living in Love and Faith resources, writes Bishop Nick. Last week the national church published its Living in Love and Faith book, plus a video version of the LLF course and there is also an LLF Learning Hub which contains specially commissioned films and podcasts and an online library for further study. Disability and inclusion, clergy wellbeing and community outreach initiatives all featured prominently at the November meeting of Diocesan Synod. Held online for only second time, motions on each of these strategic areas were put forward and then endorsed emphatically by members, after separate presentations. Read more here
A new review is seeking views from the public, and from experts in the field, on the government’s engagement with faith organisations. The Independent Faith Engagement Review is looking at how the government can best celebrate and support the contribution of faith groups, break down barriers and promote acceptance between faiths, and promote shared values, while tackling cultures and practices that are harmful. The social challenges we now face will provide opportunities to renew our worship and refresh the life of the church, Bishop Nick Baines told last weeks Diocesan Synod meeting. In the second Zoom conference synod, which hosted 115 participants, Bishop Nick also welcomed the recent publication of Living in Love and Faith. Read more here
A photo competition to celebrate accessibility, inclusion, and diversity across the church is being launched in the diocese by the Disability and Communications Teams. Commencing today (Tuesday, November 17), the competition will run for eleven days with the deadline for entries being Friday, November 27. Leeds Minster has received a much-needed grant of £326,237 from the Government’s £1.57billion Culture Recovery Fund to pay for vital roof restoration. The Minster is one of 445 heritage organisations across the country set to receive a welcome financial boost from the emergency fund help them through the coronavirus pandemic. Read more here
Children, young people, families and schools are invited to join the Diocese of Leeds Rhythm of Life venture this advent. Specially tailored resources have been created to encourage children and young people in our schools and churches to explore praying, encouraging, sharing, reflecting, celebrating, resting and creating this Christmas. Read more here
As Hindu people celebrate Diwali, their festival of light triumphing over darkness, our bishops have sent a message of greeting and goodwill. During Diwali, temples, homes, shops and office buildings are brightly lit and the festival typically lasts five days. Read the bishops message here
Plans for a sports village as part of a massive housing development near Ripon have got the backing of Bishop Helen-Ann Hartley. She is urging council chiefs to support proposals for a sports village as part of the city’s 1,300-home Clotherholme development. Read more here
Chamil Fernando, an Anglican priest from Sri Lanka, has arrived in Leeds with his family this week, to study and serve in our diocese. Chamil will live and serve in the Parish of Pudsey with his wife Evangeline and daughter Keziah. Alongside his role at the church, Chamil will attend St. Hild’s College to complete study for a BA in Ministry & Theology. Read more here

A new cookbook from a charity based in one of our churches is looking to help people eat healthy for less during the pandemic. ‘Cook with Shine’, from Shine, a local charity based at St Stephen’s West Bowling, has been written by Shine Trustee Linda Baines, and gathers together recipes she has created to make the best use of food boxes given out by the charity. Read more here

Christ Church in Skipton is celebrating the award of Grade II Star status for its organ under a prestigious listing scheme run by the British Institute of Organ Studies. This recognises the historic importance of the instrument which was built in 1906 by Harrison & Harrison of Durham. Read more here
Combining modern technology, in the form of QR codes, with the ancient practice of pilgrimage, the team at St John's, Ingrow found an innovative way to enable people to honour the sacrifices of armed service personnel during Remembrance this year. Read more here
Paths to Christ is the name of a newly published book, written by Professor Maurice Mullard, a member of St Margaret’s Church in Ilkley. Maurice, a professor of economics and social policy, has previously written books on economics, globalisation, citizenship and social justice. He is also the advisor to the government of Malta on economic policy. Read more here

Preparing Your Church Building For Winter
Help and advice to prepare your church building for winter and hopefully make a few financial savings along the way will be the focus of this first in a new series of Church Maintenance Webinars. It will be delivered on Thursday, November 19 at 12 noon by members of the Stewardship and DAC teams. If you're interested in attending please email Janet Edmond at janet.edmond@leeds.anglican.org
A course that will focus on +Nick Baines' book Freedom is Coming: From Advent to Epiphany with the prophet Isaiah. It can be attended online on Wednesday evenings on Zoom across four-weeks during Advent, starting on Wednesday, November 25. Find out more here
The Introduction to Theology 12 session course offers an opportunity to reflect upon the Christian faith and deepen your own personal journey. This course will run across three study days online, with a Sunday study day (9.00am-4.00pm) each month from January to March 2021. Find out more here
Join with Bradford Cathedral for stories to inspire and encourage prayer in troubled times, brought to you by the Welfare Reform Impact Report (WRIB) team. This pre-recorded event will premiere on their YouTube and Facebook pages on Sunday 22nd November 2020 at 6:30pm, and will be available for watch-back after.

Living in Love and Faith (LLF), The Church of England’s landmark set of resources on questions of identity and which draws together the Bible, theology, science and history with powerful real-life stories has now been published. The product of three years’ work by more than 40 people, led by the Bishop of Coventry, Living in Love and Faith includes a 480-page book, a series of films and podcasts, a course and an online library of other publications, in what is thought to be the most extensive work in this area by any faith group in the world. ‘Mr Emporium’s Gift Shop’ is a uniquely scripted filmed production of the Christian Nativity story. It will be available later this month, is free of charge and can be shared with anyone who expresses an interest. It could be used in a Christmas lesson, an assembly slot, or in partnership with your local church. There will be educational printable resources available for children to use as they engage in this unique Christmas Nativity and the online production will also be available with BSL. Streaming services has gone from being a luxury item to a necessity for many churches. A new Advent and Christmas theme for 2020, to reflect the current Covid context, has been released by the Church of England. Building on the success of #FollowTheStar, Comfort and Joy will better enable us to reflect where the country is and will be by the end of this year.
