January Green Team Tips

It’s time for New Year’s Resolutions! Challenge yourself to add new actions in the coming year to your faith commitment to care for God’s creation. Take stock of your energy usage. Contact your utilities to see if they will do an energy audit of your home. Usually, those are free and helpful. Then calculate your carbon footprint at The Nature Conservancy or from Carbon FootPrint website.

Plastic pollution threatens so much of our lives and especially our oceans. Check out the bill that is before Congress now: Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act.

According to Project Drawdown, the #3 effective solution for dealing with the climate crisis is to minimize food waste. Plan meals carefully, buy less, buy in-season, store food well, use the freezer, reduce the intake of beef and other meat, grow veggies, eat leftovers, make soup and smoothies with smaller amounts of leftovers, compost peelings and ends, share with others.
Every day 27,000 trees lose their lives to make toilet tissue. Some companies clear-cut virgin forests for their products. Switch to a sustainable TP alternative—bamboo, which can be harvested every three months. Recycle old denim into new insulation. Check out the Blue Jeans Go Green Program.
Volunteers still needed!
The Franklin County Warming Shelter is a community effort to provide a warm place to sleep during the coldest of months for those experiencing homelessness. Volunteers are needed to provide meals, register guests, and sleep overnight.
Email Susan Hughes with questions or to volunteer.
Thanks for your ongoing support!!
