DOGGIE DINER
Hello Everyone!
The past few months have gone by so very fast. Wintertime is now behind us and everyone is looking forward to Summer. I would like to call it perfect hot dog eating weather!
It is now time to be thinking of outdoor activities such as sports! Doggie Diner company was a huge fan and supporter of sports teams. In this newsletter are several historical photos of Doggie Diner teams in the 1960s.
Unfortunately, I recently had some health issues. My routine check-up visit to the hospital ended up being rushed to the Emergency Room. I went from a person with bulletproof health to someone who is very mortal. With lights flashing and alarms going off, I realized this was no television show, but me in real jeopardy.
After a barrage of medical tests, procedures, and trials of various medications, I am doing okay. But, I need to slow down, generate less stress, and take time to relax.
For over 15 years, Doggie Diner has been my second job and 100% passion. However, this is a project of "choice". At this time, it is best for me to step away from active duty running Doggie Diner company.
My incredible business partner believes in Doggie Diner as much as I do. He has graciously offered to take over my responsibilities. Due to this, I can leave the company knowing it is in good hands.
I will not be far away. I love the Doggie too much!

After all these years my husband and I still remember those wonderful pastrami sandwiches, that no one has ever been able to duplicate. Back in the day before we met, we both used to grab a bite at Doggie Diner, here in Emeryville, me at the Hayward location. After we married we had no time or money to go to Doggie Diner. But over the years we have shared wonderful memories of those days with friends. Carefree living and great pastrami sandwiches at the Doggie Diner. Please come back! We have lots of time and money now after 58 years of marriage. And would love to share pastrami sandwiches together at a Doggie Diner again.

I ended up moving out of San Francisco in my 20s with my military husband and family and settled on the East Coast, (Gloucester County, Virginia). My most vivid memories of visiting Doggie Diner were with my father on the weekends. We lived in the Sunset District, so your establishment on Sloat Blvd. was our go-to-location. There is where I learned that (A) Y'all had the best chili, and (B) The way to order mine was without beans, but with "extra O". That was my father's way of asking for a garnish of diced onions on top. Your staff knew exactly what he meant, and they never failed to make him happy. And me, as well. Chili without beans but with extra O is the only way I've eaten chili all my life. Just wanted to give you a warm laugh, and let you know that Doggie Diner is so very deeply missed in my heart.

Was there a Doggie Diner in El Cerrrito, California? My dad took my sisters and I to Doggie Diner on our Sunday drives in the 1950's. Great times and memories!

Everyone knows about Doggie Head!
But do you know Doggie Head Jr.?
The following photos are of a very
rare original Doggie Head Jr.
If I am correct, these were used as advertising mascots
and were mounted on top of company delivery vehicles.

Bacon Mac 'N Cheese
Hot Dog!

INGREDIENTS
4 hot dog wieners
4 hot dog or sausage buns
8 rashers bacon, cooked
1 cup macaroni and cheese, warmed
1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese
1 cup creamy coleslaw, for garnish
PROCEDURE
Prepare the hot dogs: Preheat grill to 500° degrees. Using a paring knife, cut small slits along the length of the wieners, marking every half-inch and going about halfway deep. Transfer the wieners onto the hot grill and cook for about 5 minutes, turning occasionally to ensure they're uniformly cooked.
Open buns on a work surface and line each side with a rasher of bacon. Add a helping of macaroni and cheese onto each, spreading it across. Place one cooked wiener onto each bun. Sprinkle with cheese. Place prepared hot dogs into an oven-safe casserole or rectangular banking pan. Transfer to preheated oven 250 degrees and bake for 10-15 minutes or until cheese has melted and bun is toasted. Garnish with a generous helping of coleslaw, distributing it across the hot dog. Serve immediately.

It's nice to see the DD coming back. Growing up in Oakland, we always considered it an Oakland institution. Both my brothers, Greg and Paige, played on the DD baseball teams from around 1958 through the middle sixties. Games were played all over Oakland and Alameda baseball fields. Exposition Fields 1&2 and Arroyo Viejo Field, Krusi Park, Lincoln Park, Bushrod Rec. Field and Golden Gate Rec. Field to name a few. DD's arch-nemeses were Quick Way and Babs Milk sponsored teams. Al Ross's son, Bobby Ross, played on the team and was a frequent guest at our house. After the baseball season was over, the Ross's invited the team and their families for a barbecue and a swim at their home in Oakland. Ironically their home was not far from a Kaspers Hot Dog Restaurant, another Oakland institution. In closing, let's see if we can't get some memorabilia with the Oakland brand on it. Oakland was a big part of the DD legacy, not so much SF.
The above photos are examples of the Doggie Diner team uniforms and players of the 1960s. The Red & White uniforms are from 1960 and the Blue & White are from 1963. Notables in photos are Bobby Ross, son of the Doggie Diner owner Al Ross and long-time Assistant Coach Phil Denoncourt. The team played in the Oakland Babe Ruth League.
Photos are courtesy of Todd & Mindy Cabral. A big thank you!
Todd, I agree. Doggie Diner was founded in Oakland in 1948 and its heart was always located there. Perhaps the reason San Francisco has embraced DD so much was that it had the most locations?
