This Sunday - 10am

Sunday, August 2, is our Holy Communion Sunday! Everyone is invited to share in Communion with us at Ghent UMC.

Bring someone you care about to our small-space worship. It provides a more connected and intimate worship experience that can be tough to find in today’s hectic, disconnected world. Use this time to exhale and reflect on the goodness of God.

Our worship service will be in our basement Fellowship Hall. Enter through the door facing the parking lot. Look for the balloons.

Scripture

Genesis 32:22-31

Pastor's Pick for the Week

It’s a two-fer! Check out the song “All Night” by Alvin Darling & Celebration.

It ties together the Scripture lesson and the struggles we face that keep us up at night.

For some southern barbershop vibes, then check out “Wrastlin’ Jacob”

by Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver.

What's Going On?

We Need Some Volunteer Greeters

We will be having church in our Fellowship Hall which is in the basement for the next couple of weeks.

If you would like to volunteer to help greet people at the parking lot door, help direct people from our front staircase (Stockley Gardens), or if you would like to help us set up and/or take down chairs, then PLEASE let Pastor Britney know. You may also email the church office at office@ghentumc.org.

Pray for our Discernment Team

We are grateful for those who have accepted the call to discuss, research, and pray over where God is leading our congregation. We have five individuals. If you would like to pray for them by name, please email the church office.

See What Your Help Has Accomplished

Through the generosity of United Methodists and a trusted network of global partners, read how the church supported life-changing ministries across Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and the Middle East in 2025.

Donate Men and Women's Clothes and Toiletries

Ghent UMC is now collecting new and gently used men's and women's clothes. We are focused on collecting clothes that people can wear to work such as khaki pants, jeans, and polo shirts. Please take a look in your closets and see what you have available to donate.

We are not accepting suits or dress up clothes. The donated clothes for women and men will go to Ghent Area Ministry.

Lift Your Spirit!

Our Minister of Music Nellwyn Beamon recently went to Princeton, New Jersey for the annual Hymn Society conference. They recorded their awesome musical festivals!

Be moved by a variety of music. Go the Hymn Society's YouTube channel and click on the Live tab. You will not be disappointed.

Music Ministry

All are welcome to join our Minister of Music, Nellwyn Beamon, in the music ministry of the church.

Contact Nellwyn Beamon, at music@ghentumc.org, if you have any questions or want more information.

Church Choir

Choir rehearsals are on Sundays from 11:30am to 12:30pm in the choir room upstairs. Our choir is off for the summer. It will start again Sunday, September 13, Grandparents Day!

If you are interested in joining us, please get in touch with Nellwyn. Email address is above.

Gathering Jam Band

Each 2nd Sunday, all ages are invited to bring an instrument or use one of ours and play along during the gathering part of our service at 9:45am. If you would like the music beforehand, contact Nellwyn. No band in August.

Organ Music at Ghent

Our Organist Brad Norris plays during our worship services. His next date is TBA.

Congregational Care

In response to Christ's call to love one another, we want the members of our congregation to care for one another. In-person visits, prayers, phone calls, and mail are examples of the ways we reach out to one another.

If you would like to volunteer or request a visit for someone, call or email the church office.

Children are Always Welcome at Ghent UMC

Our Children's Sunday School* takes place each Sunday during our worship service, following the children's message. Children, ages 3 through 5th grade, meet in room 208 (down the hall from the sanctuary) for an age-appropriate Bible lesson and related craft or activity.

Children are welcome to remain in the service next to you. They may also sit in the kids' area to read, draw or color. We have activity bags in the back of the church for them.

Our nursery* is available for infants to age 3 beginning at 9:50am.

Our professional workers are CPR certified, and our staff and volunteers are fully background checked.

*Children's Sunday School and nursery are optional. You are welcome to keep your child(ren) in worship with you, if you prefer. Activity bags and rockers are in the back of the sanctuary, if you wish to use them.

A baby changing station is in the lobby. Go out the swinging door to the right of our Coffee Station. The changing station is near the staircase and restroom.

Ways to Give

  • To give by mail, send your checks to GUMC, 531 Raleigh Ave., Norfolk, VA 23507.

  • To give in person, put your donation in a basket on Sunday mornings or take it to the church office during the week.

  • Other ways to give include endowments and stocks. For more information, call the church office at (757) 622-2843.

Our giving represents an act of worship in which we thank God for our blessings and acknowledge that everything we have is a gift from God.
