WHAT'S NEW

Housing Preservation Grant Awarded

USDA Rural Development has awarded Penquis a Housing Preservation Grant (HPG) in the amount of $84,829. This USDA grant program provides funds to qualified organizations to repair or rehabilitate housing occupied by families with very low and low income in eligible rural areas. Penquis will use the funding to assist 20 households in Penobscot, Piscataquis, and Knox counties. The HPG funds will be leveraged with approximately $275,000 in funding from MaineHousing, NeighborWorks, the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development, and other weatherization programs.

Children's Behavioral Health Fund Gets a Boost

A generous contribution of $5,000 has been received from an anonymous donor to benefit the Children's Behavioral Health Fund.

Penquis serves a number of children with autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, depression, and/or post-traumatic stress disorder. Many materials that can alleviate symptoms, improve children’s ability to cope, and aid in recovery often are not covered by MaineCare insurance and beyond families’ ability to purchase. Even simple items such as coloring and journaling supplies, which help children with emotional challenges to express themselves and heal, can be beyond a family’s financial capacity. Donations to the Children's Behavioral Health Fund are used to purchase items not covered by insurance. These include communication tools such as PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) boards that can help non-verbal children communicate, sensory tools such as chewy tubes, and noise-canceling devices.

We appreciate this generous support!

Head Start Learns About Fire Safety

The children at our Rockland Head Start at High Street and South School have been learning about fire safety. Carl Anderson from the Rockland Fire Department brought a fire truck to the center and the school for the children to see. Each child was given the opportunity to “drive the truck.” Before he left, Mr. Anderson left a fire hat and reflective bag for each child. Thank you, Rockland Fire Department!

SAY Program Shows Its Halloween Spirit

Penquis teams have been out and about this Halloween season! Our Substance-Affected Youth (SAY) team had a strong showing at the annual UCP Pumpkins in the Park event where thousands of children had the opportunity to play games and receive many treats. In preparation for the event, the SAY team held a pizza party with their youth and carved intricate pumpkins to make the fishing scene above, honoring the event's theme, “hooked on books"! Penquis teams also participated in several Trunk or Treat events in the community. Thank you to the SAY team and to the youth who participated in these events!
