Why is 988 important?
The need for mental health support during times of crisis continues to grow, and this need was highlighted during the Pandemic as many people across the nation were left without access to mental health services. Some startling statistics from the past 2 years include:
- that the U.S had 1 death by suicide about every 11 minutes
- In people aged 10-34 years old, suicide is the leading cause of death
- 13% of youth aged 12-17 report experiencing at least one major depressive episode.
Multiple studies show that people are less likely to feel suicidal, depressed, and overwhelmed after speaking with a counselor. In fact, people report feeling more hopeful and are able to identify life saving resources when they are able to connect with someone during a crisis.
Please be sure to spread the word about 988 with all your family, friends, and loved ones. In addition, consider saving 988 in your contact list should you experience a mental health crisis and need support.
