Black History Month
February is Black History Month! And we are excited to show you how we honor the contributions of African American leaders, community members, and professionals during this time.

JUST TAKE A LOOK

Ms. Donna is often the first person clients talk to before they even come into our clinic. She honors diversity in our clinic by being sensitive to clients' needs when it comes to culture and diversity and accommodating them with a clinician that best suits their needs.

Ms. Donna is also a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, founded in 1974 and was the first Black congregation in the country. She is proud to be a member of AME and is committed to their mission: "to minister to the social, spiritual, and physical development of all people".
Ms. Rachel honors diversity in our clinic by educating herself the on diversity and cultural needs of the clients she serves. She proactively takes continuing education courses that advance her knowledge both professionally and personally. She is particularly knowledgeable about the negative impact of racism on African American people in the community. Not only is she able to have tough conversations, but she is also committed to providing a safe space for clients where they feel heard, respected, and are able to share their unique experiences.

Ms. Rachel also makes sure in her work with children that she uses books, toys, and activities that reflect children and families of diverse backgrounds.
As a clinician, Ms. West always tries to tie in social-emotional learning while highlighting influential African Americans. This month, she had the opportunity to share the book Darryl’s Dream, with one of her 6th-grade groups.

Written by hip-hop legend and pioneer Darryl "DMC" McDaniels, the book shares the rapper’s story about finding confidence, facing bullies, and celebrating the unique talents that ultimately led to him being a member of the group Run DMC.

A huge part of Ms. West's job is to help young people develop self-awareness, self-management as well as responsible decision-making skills. This book highlights 3 key components of SEL as well as the success of one of the most influential rappers in history.
Dr. James is always open to celebrating her African American heritage. In fact, one of her favorite things to do is to share leadership lessons from her grandmother who was a self-made woman that grew up in the time of segregation. Despite experiencing discrimination and marginalization her grandmother was able to reside in different states, learn various trades, and earn educational achievements.

In February of 2022, Dr. James honored her grandmother's legacy through a series of discussions she conducted for the African American Heritage Resource Group at Marsh McLennan. During these talks, she discussed characteristics of resilience and utilized examples from her grandmother's legacy to guide the audience in better understanding specific constructs.

As Black History Month winds down, Dr. James reminds us all of the need to always recognize the contributions of all African Americans who have come before us. In her words, "we stand on the shoulder of giants who, despite hardship, were never afraid to fall."

Happy Black History Month. !
