In our ever-changing and unpredictable world, it is always important to prioritize your mental health. Every day we all encounter stress from home life, work-life, and family matters. It may be easier said than done to make your mental health a priority, but with small changes, you can manage changes in mood and respond to stressors.
Below are some tips to consider:
-
Create a bedtime routine: Getting enough sleep is not only helpful for energy levels but it stabilizes mood. Creating a routine around bedtime is not just for kids and can be helpful in sticking to your sleep schedule. Consider turning off all electronics at least one hour before bed, setting an alarm to remind you when to start your routine, reading a book before bed, or listening sleep mediations for relaxation.
-
Make time for social connections: Humans are social creatures so interacting with one another actually reduces tension, lowers the stress response, and promotes wellness. Promote your happiness by calling a friend, going out for coffee, or watching a show with a friend or family member.
-
Plan leisure time: Americans are socialized to believe that work contributes to success. However, all work and no play can have a dramatic impact on the body. Set a time in your day for fun! Write down fun or relaxing activities and prepare a quick list of things to do when you notice your mood heading in a downward spiral.
-
Use Sensory Activities: We all interact with the world through our senses. That is why, establishing a good understanding of how you are experiencing the world creates a safe and stable outlook. To increase your sensory responses, take a walk outside, squeeze a stress ball, create arts and crafts, or listen to your favorite song.
-
Find time to unplug: We are overloaded with messages and this has made the world very unsafe. Take time away from the news, electronics, and social media to destress and decompress. Use your unplugged time for self-care activities like taking bath, reading a book or getting some exercise. Think about new hobbies outside of electronics that you want to try so that you are not so dependent on the phone or tablet to keep your company.
Remember, it is your responsibility to prioritize your mental health. Get creative and don’t feel discouraged if you can’t engage in self-care daily. Most importantly, remember to always reach out to your mental health provider for additional support.
