Who have you checked on recently?
As all our lives continue to move on and get busy, do you remember the last time you checked on your friends or family? When was the last time someone checked on you? Well, if you didn't know, social support plays a significant role in maintaining positive mental health outcomes.
Although it may seem small, those little “just checking in” calls, texts, or emails have a life-saving effect. Not only does a simple check-in let someone know they have support, but it also serves as an early intervention tool. By addressing problem behaviors early many individuals are able to secure the resources they need to improve their functioning.
So, how can you check in on someone? Below are a few simple tips:
1. Provide direct inquiry by asking open-ended questions. Below are some examples:
“How are you feeling today?” “I wanted to see how I can support you” “I’m thinking of you, how is…” “I’m here to listen” “Just a quick reminder that you are loved” “How are you managing everything?”
2. Pause and listen for the answer. By taking a pause, you provide space for an individual to share their response. While it can be uncomfortable to wait, you have to remind yourself that you don’t have to have the solution to every problem. Instead, you need to be a good listener and acknowledge when what you have heard is concerning or needs an elevated level of support.
3. Follow up: Don’t be afraid to keep reaching out and remember staying engaged keeps you informed.
As we move through our busy lives, remember that social support is a powerful tool in promoting positive mental health outcomes.
