March 2025

Message from the Director

Friends,

With Spring being officially here, for many of us the change of season means opportunities to take care of some outside chores, maybe take a few days off to travel or watch basketball, or even knock out the spring cleaning checklist.

As you are tackling the spring to-do’s, I would encourage you to have “check in on staff” as one of them. In three recent projects, staff feedback in organizations lifted up items our front-line folks are handling that are uncharted, uncomfortable, and often unnoticed. Praise to these organizations for gaining insight to better serve their most valuable resources…the human ones.

PPMC recently had the opportunity to facilitate a full day retreat with the Butler County Board of County Commissioners and Staff Leadership Team. Through pre-retreat interviews and a department director survey, more than half of the retreat was spent on how to retain, grow, and attract the best staff to serve because these were the items identified as most consequential to the future success of the organization. They deserve a huge shout-out for their efforts and allowing us to be part of such productive and positive conversations. No organization is perfect, but public service is a people business, and focusing on those that provide the services leads to success.

Director

Access & Engagement

Engagement is core to strategic planning. This month, the Access & Engagement team continued our work with the Sedgwick County Government to help gather perspective from staff and leadership that informs our strategic plan process.

Participants of the session were divided into small groups and given special exercises designed to exract useful data. With diagrams provided by the PPMC, Sedgwick County Government officials worked together to determine the productive and negative forces affecting their ability for success. Together, we are building a process that ensures mutual accountability and productive outcomes.

Applied Research & Collaboration

The Applied Research & Collaboration team traveled to Qualtrics X4 in Salt Lake City to explore advanced survey research techniques for understanding stakeholder experiences using AI tools that can help analyze survey data more effectively and provide deeper insights into organizational challenges. These new AI-powered research methods will enable more nuanced analysis of policy impact, helping the PPMC bridge gaps between data collection and meaningful community-centered interventions.

Talent & Organizational Success

The 75th Anniversary of CCMFOA kicked off this March in Manhattan, Kansas. Our Talent & Organizational Success Team was in the ‘Little Apple’ to host 157 clerks and financial officers from across the state, supported by more than 40 vendors and sponsors.

Danny Adams, the Facilitator of Fun, kicked off the event on Wednesday with fun and laughter. Beth Varner and Dave Turnbull with Square Holes spoke to the group on Thursday morning about the different ways that people act or behave and how to identify and support them. Friday finished off the conference with the annual business meeting as well as the Rookie of the Year / Clerk of the Year awards. Andrew Myers from WSU wrapped up the conference and left us excited to gather again next year.
