Continuing on my theme of what summer can teach us, let’s talk baseball. For the past several years my family has been heavily involved in playing and coaching in League 42. This year had its own challenges on the team, which required players to be in positions they had never before played.
On one play, a newer player made a great defensive move and stepped on second base to get the out. They could have easily then made the throw to first to get the double play, which the many ‘helpers’ in the crowd made sure to loudly point out. The coach, however, celebrated the play and, in between innings, talked to the player about the next step. This player not only had never played shortstop, but never played baseball until this year.
This got me thinking about how much we ask of employees and the new skills we are asking them to develop. Whether we are talking about technology, generational change, demographics, communication outlets, partnership building, or AI, there is constant change. New skills are constantly needed. And, we are often putting in players that have never turned this proverbial double play before.
Whether you are the coach or the player, here is something for consideration: How are we directing, coaching, or supporting our teams to learn that new skill? How are we supporting our team with training and practices to develop the knowledge they need? And, how are we protecting our team from the “helpers” in the stands?
Much like a good baseball team, I hope you celebrate the little and the big wins for your team. Also, remember snacks after the game also go a long ways.
