New student organization: Student National Dental Association (SNDA)

Second-year dental students Ian Fullinfaw and Shyamaly Premaraj started a local chapter of the Student National Dental Association (SNDA), a national organization with a longstanding goal to promote, aid and support the academic and social environment of minority students.

The immediate goals of the College of Dentistry's SNDA chapter are to:
  • increase the representation of dental students from underserved and underrepresented communities through mentorship;
  • build an inclusive, caring community at UNMC;
  • build awareness of important social and racial issues; and
  • increase outreach to underserved communities in Lincoln and Nebraska.

Interested in getting involved? Contact Ian ([email protected]). The faculty advisor is Dr. Yun Saksena.
Celebrating trailblazing minority leaders in dentistry

In celebration of Black History Month, SNDA is featuring trailblazing minority leaders in dentistry. Look for flyers around the college and posts on the college's social media channels.

Weeth Lecture helps prepare students for treating pediatric patients

The college's annual Weeth Lecture was held online on January 8. The speaker was Kevin J. Donly, DDS, MS, professor and chair in the department of developmental dentistry and professor in the department of pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. His presentation was titled "Update in Pediatric Preventive and Restorative Dentistry." The college's third- and fourth-year dental students attended.
Selam Carlson, a third-year dental student, said, "I loved how the lecture was full of research-backed, evidence-based dentistry. The clinical knowledge Dr. Donly shared is going to really benefit our class as we begin to rotate in the pediatric clinic this semester. Overall, I really enjoyed Dr. Donly’s review of the different techniques and materials we have already been exposed to, as well as the new knowledge he introduced.”
Students gain a wealth of knowledge at What's New in Dentistry 2021

The college's annual What's New in Dentistry lecture was held online on January 29. Jeffrey Payne, DDS, MDentSc, F. Gene and Rosemary Dixon Endowed Chair in Dentistry and professor in the department of surgical specialties at the UNMC College of Dentistry, presented "Periodontal Disease Classification: Out with the Old, In with the New." The college's third- and fourth-year dental students attended.
Allie Koth, a fourth-year dental student, said, "I enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the updated American Academy of Periodontology periodontal classification guidelines. These classifications changed about halfway through our dental education, so it was helpful to be given the opportunity to attend this presentation. We will be better prepared to put these guidelines into practice in clinic and after graduation. I also enjoyed sitting in on the lecture with practicing dentists who ask great questions and add to the discussion."
Other What's New in Dentistry presentations were: Hany M. Makkawy, DDS, assistant professor in the department of surgical specialties at the UNMC College of Dentistry, presented "Interrelationships of Endodontics and Dental Implants in Treatment Planning and Patient Treatment" and Dr. Daniel J. Tylka, a UNMC alum and oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Lincoln, presented “Dental Implants: Past, Present and Future.”
