Our six-week summer reading program ended with a wriggle and a cup of dirt! Paula Boyce (in the yellow shirt in the top-right photo) brought in some earthworms – and don't worry, they found a good home in one family's backyard garden. Class ended with a special treat. Dirt pudding made from crushed Oreo cookies, a pudding mixture, and, of course, some worms — gummy worms!
Paula worked hard to create a science-based program steeped in facts and fun. Among other things, they read lots of books, such as Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt, Tell Me, Tree, and Diary of a Worm. They planted radish seeds, learned about trees, did bark and leaf rubbings, and made fairy gardens with Linda Faatz, a master gardener from Gorham. The last session was all about worms and how important they are for gardens.
Thank you, Paula, for creating a wonderful program for the children in our community. Thanks also to the Davis Family Foundation for the grant to the Library that made it possible.
