During Signal Modernization Work

New York City Transit

Updated June 1, 2023 6:00 p.m.

Ongoing Culver Line Signal Modernization Project will Improve Subway Service in Brooklyn

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that shuttle buses will replace weekend  train service in southern Brooklyn beginning June 16 and going through the end of 2023 during signal modernization work. The Culver Line Signal Modernization project is fully replacing signals on the Culver Line from Church Av to West 8 St in Brooklyn to improve reliability and resilience.

“Replacing aging equipment is fundamental to modernizing and improving our infrastructure,” said MTA Construction and Development President Jamie Torres-Springer. “New signal technology will allow us to improve speeds and on-time performance for  train customers in Brooklyn.”

train service will operate between Jamaica-179 St and Church Av the following weekends. Free shuttle buses will operate between Church Av and Coney Island-Stillwell Av to provide service to closed stations. These dates are subject to change.

  • November 17 – November 20
  • November 24 – November 27
  • December 1 – December 4
  • December 8 – December 11
  • December 15 – December 18
  • December 22 – December 25
  • December 29 – January 1

Nearby  trains and local buses will provide alternate service between Church Av and Coney Island-Stillwell Av. For direct service between Manhattan/Downtown Brooklyn and Coney Island, customers can take  trains instead.

"I am glad that the MTA heard and responded to the community’s concerns about the planned service outages along the  train line and will be introducing shuttle service as a result of the advocacy of myself and my colleagues, Councilman Kagan and Assemblyman Brook-Krasny,” said Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton. “The increased subway reliability and frequency made possible by the Culver Line Signal Modernization Project is critical, but such a project cannot leave Southern Brooklynites without alternate transit options, especially as the busy, hot summer months begin. I look forward to the welcome addition of shuttle bus service and to continued collaboration with the MTA and the community at large.”

“I am very glad to learn that the MTA listened to the concerns of the community and elected officials and agreed to provide free shuttle bus service to the residents of Southern Brooklyn,” said New York City Council Member Ari Kagan. “This shuttle service along the  line between Coney Island/Stillwell Av and Church Av for the entire period of the construction project will provide the opportunity for riders to reach their destination. I will continue to work with the MTA, elected officials and community partners to make sure the residents of Southern Brooklyn have viable public transportation options.”

“Brooklyn Community Board 13 would like to extend our gratitude to the MTA on behalf of our constituents,” said Brooklyn Community Board 13 Chairperson Lucy Mujica Diaz and District Manager Eddie Mark. “As the warmer days approach and ridership increases to the Coney Island area, providing F train shuttle bus service for this community is not only a need, it is a must. We hope to build on these accomplishments and support the work of universal inclusion for our community.”
