Safety & health

Avoid catalytic converter theft

Catalytic converter thefts continue to be a problem in Houston and other cities. Catalytic converters are stolen because the insider of the converter consists of a honeycomb structure that contains small amounts of three precious metals: platinum, palladium and rhodium.

To avoid thefts, Officer Lucia Vieira of the Houston Police Department offers these tips:

  1. Take your vehicle to a muffler shop and have the catalytic converter sprayed with high-heat paint.
  2. Have the muffler shop etch the last eight numbers of your VIN on the catalytic converter.
  3. If your catalytic converter is stolen, report it to the Houston Police Department. This may help HPD to trace the converter back to you if it is found.
  4. Whenever possible, park your vehicle in your garage.

Don't forget to get your flu shot

Protect yourself and your family against the flu by getting vaccinated. The Houston Health Department encourages everyone ages six months and older to protect themselves, their family and the community by getting a flu shot now. People can receive flu and COVID-19 vaccines at the same time—in different arms—during a visit to their medical provider.

Are you up to date on your COVID-19 vaccines?

Make sure you are up to date on your COVID-19 vaccines by getting all recommended doses, including a booster when eligible. Vaccination helps protect you from serious illness, hospitalization and death. It also helps reduce spread. Learn the facts about vaccination at cdc.gov.
