Economic development

Business Tour Series launches

On January 23, Greater Northside Management District and Thrive For Greatness launched the Business Tour Series, which focuses on businesses owned by graduates of the Thrive Business Revitalization Program.

Thrive Greater Northside is an economic development program through a partnership between Greater Northside Management District and Avenue CDC to help small businesses thrive. The program provides support to the business community in the Greater Northside and works collectively to promote one another. Graduates of the program were recognized during the Northside Festival in October 2025.

The first business featured was JPesos Janitorial, which is owned by Jose and Yesica Pesos. We hope you will patronize this well-stocked store located at 6416 Irvington Blvd., Houston.

Moody Park enhancements

Big news for Moody Park! The City of Houston has partnered with Harris County Precinct 2 to support the long-term care and improvement of Moody Park. The City will retain ownership, while the County takes on maintenance and operations including mowing, litter removal, security, tree care and field enhancements. Upcoming upgrades connected to the World Cup, along with additional improvements championed by Commissioner Adrian Garcia, are also on the way.

With continued involvement from Friends of Moody Park and the community, and no City funding required, this collaboration delivers a stronger, better-maintained park for the Near Northside and District H. Special thanks to Mayor Whitmire, Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia and Houston Parks and Recreation for making it happen.

Houston Chronicle's Top 100 Restaurants
includes three Northside businesses

CasaEma, 5307 N Main St, Suite 100, Houston 77009

What the Houston Chronicle said:

This acclaimed Heights bakery-café has become one of Houston’s most distinctive collaborations. Pastry chef Stephanie Velasquez, savory chef Nicolas Vera and coffee specialist Marlén Mendoza have built an intimate and ambitious place without feeling cookie cutter. You feel equally welcomed with a group sharing a spread of sweets or in workout clothes spooning slices of lime-tinged papaya dotting a bowl of yogurt.

Whatever your game plan, don’t skip Velasquez’s pastries. The pastry case shows rare finesse: feathery blue-corn conchas and golden Berlinesas filled with horchata cream are precise yet playful (go early before they sell out). Honoring their shared heritage, Vera adds modern twists, where chilaquiles come alive with punchy salsas, a buttery-soft carrot is nestled in an heirloom corn tortilla and French toast soaked in hoja santa custard blurs the line between breakfast pastry and dessert.

Mendoza’s roastery work grounds it all. Her café de olla, perfumed with cinnamon and orange peel, scents the minimalist room filled with sunlight. The creativity feels effortless across the menu. It’s also proof that Houston’s next wave of culinary talent doesn’t need a big restaurant group or flashy pedigree; just three partners who bake, cook and roast with conviction.

Pinkerton’s Barbecue, 1504 Airline Dr, Houston 77009

What the Houston Chronicle said:

Pitmaster and owner Grant Pinkerton has combined his long experience cooking barbecue, both in his backyard and more recently in competitions around the country, to produce a focused and consistent version of Central Texas-style barbecue.

The welcoming dining room is decorated with Pinkerton’s family photos going back a century or more, providing indisputable bona fides for his Lone Star State smoked meats.

Puebla’s Mexican Kitchen, 6320 N Main St, Houston 77009

What the Houston Chronicle said:

Houston is not that big on diners, those comforting places you drop in for a no-frills breakfast or lunch with bright fluorescent lighting and large plastic menus. But we have plenty of dependable Mexican restaurants serving breakfast tacos, huevos divorciados, tamales and more at places like this family-run restaurant in Sunset Heights.

The Padillas opened the space as a bakery in 2001 before focusing on homestyle Mexican dishes. The Torta Don Carlos — sunny-side eggs, bacon and guacamole tucked into a house-baked telera roll — is right up there with the city's greatest breakfast egg sandwiches. Chilaquiles come tangled in green or red sauce with crumbly queso fresco and squiggles of crema on top.

Puebla’s start as a bakery shines on Fridays: the cemita, a Pueblan-style sandwich featuring a sesame-topped roll with a crusty pan-fried steak, arrives warm with soft slices of avocado and strips of white cheese almost melting into it. We can’t think of too many better ways to start the day.
