Follow God
This verse is definitely a staple for me to come back to often. I will share with you, though, that I have often return to this verse to be reminded of my need to surrender — perhaps when life has just been unusually hard and discouraging. I focus most on the part of the verse that says, "let him deny himself... and follow me.” (Lord, help me to everyday deny my selfish self!)
Only recently have I begun to embrace the part which speaks clearly to take up our cross. I'm drawn to the word "take.” It's active. I don't think it is just about the burdens we are called to bear due to the hassles or hardships of life. I believe it is deeper than that. In reference to this verse, Max Lucado says, "The cross means so much more! It’s God’s tool of redemption, His instrument of salvation, proof of His love for people. To take up the cross is to take up Christ’s burden for the people of the world." Following God truly is a daily surrender but also an active choice to take on Christ's burden for the people of this world and love them.
I also consider that Jesus said this to His disciples and to the crowd around Him before He died on the cross for us. Perhaps there is more symbolism here than I initially understand. I do know the people wanted a Messiah to save them from bondage to the Roman government, but Jesus came to save them from bondage to sin. He took up His cross as the ultimate act in loving us, so that we can have freedom in Him. As we learn to follow Him, may we deny ourselves and also take up His cross, Christ's burden for the people of the world. May our hearts daily surrender our selfish desires in order to fully love those around us.
In Christ, Erin McGrath, MSHS Assistant Principal

The Audio Visual (A/V) class did a fantastic job on its first big project - running tech for the Stage Left Production! Students worked hard, had laser focus, and learned how to respond calmly to "hiccups" that came up during the plays.

First Grade students enjoyed having 5th Grade Leadership Class students come in the classroom. The Leadership students showed them how to play a math game on an iPad. It was great to see the leaders interact so patiently, kindly, enthusiastically, and conscientiously. All students had a great time.

KM is halfway through the alphabet in learning one Bible verse per week for A-Z.
I'm so proud of them for continuing to hide God's Word in their hearts. I said to a parent this afternoon, "Don't you wish our brains were still that elastic?!"

Spanish I students presented their oral presentations this week. They used a graphic organizer to gather information and then wrote paragraphs. They did an amazing job in their writing and speaking.

We learned about ball handling in PE and how important it is to be able to control the ball in basketball. I challenged the students to go home and work on the drills I taught them at home and several of them reported they did the drills at home and were excited to get better at it.

The 2018 Annual Dinner was an exciting evening filled with great food and fellowship as we celebrated the many blessings God has provided for the RCS ministry. Superintendent Hearne updated the RCS community regarding Vision 2020, our three-year campaign to raise $1.25 million leading into Redwood's 50th anniversary next school year. As we begin our second year of this effort, RCS seeks to raise funds to complete three major projects:
- Complete the Bruce D. Johnson gymnasium.
- Continue to renovate our elementary classrooms to provide a Christ-centered educational environment that motivates our students to learn.
- Create a modern science lab that will better equip our middle school and high school students for 21st Century learning.
We are pleased to report, through our generous supporters, RCS has raised $1,187,000 which includes a generous grant recently provided by the Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation for Phase II of the Bruce D. Johnson gymnasium. We praise God for His provision as we anticipate completing Phase II of the gymnasium project by May 2019!
