Wakefield Cathedral has hosted a special service to launch the Church of England’s first Persian language translation of Holy Communion to further engage with the growing numbers of Iranians in our congregations. Some 500 Iranians from across the country packed into the cathedral and were welcomed by its Dean, the Very Revd Canon Simon Cowling and Subdean Revd Canon Tony Macpherson.

A delegation from our diocese has just returned from a bridge-building trip to Hanover, Germany. Bishop of Ripon, the Rt Revd Dr Helen-Ann Hartley, along with the Revd Dr Hayley Matthews, Diocesan Director of Lay Training, and the Revd Derek Jones, curate in Little Horton, Bradford, travelled to Hanover for a four-day exploratory visit, getting to know the context of the Church there, and meeting with various lay and clergy representatives.

The new Archdeacon of Richmond and Craven, Canon Jonathan Gough, will be installed at Ripon Cathedral this Sunday and is looking forward to working with clergy and laity in rural ministry. Jonathan, who previously served as the Assistant Chaplain General to the British Army, arrived in the Ripon Episcopal Area last month and will be installed by Bishop of Kirkstall, the Rt Revd Paul Slater at the 3.30pm service on Sunday, March 10.

General Synod has approved legislation increasing flexibility for worship schedules in multi-parish benefices. Synod voted strongly in support of changes allowing churches in group ministry to rotate services without explicit permission. Existing legislation had required that Morning and Evening Prayer be said each day in every church and Holy Communion be held each week in every church. Under the new legislation, the same services need only need be held in one church within a benefice, at the same regularity.

Lent is upon us - the spiritual time of repentance in the Christian calendar which offers a chance to say sorry to God. For many people Ash Wednesday was the start of a period of prayer, fasting and repentance, which lasts throughout the forty (week) days of Lent to Easter Day. Across our diocese, the ashes, made from the palm fronds woven into crosses for last year’s Palm Sunday, were used to mark the sign of the cross on people’s foreheads.

Jesus Weeps for Peace is the title of a special Palm Sunday event to be held at Bradford Cathedral
, featuring inspirational stories from one of the world’s most deeply conflicted areas. The evening event will focus on the relevant experiences of two women, Hedva Haymov and Shireen Awaad.

Halifax Minster hosted the funeral of former ‘Class of 92’ coach Eric Harrison.
Mourners attending the funeral included many notable names from the football world, including David Beckham and Sir Alex Ferguson who provided a eulogy. Reverend Hilary Barber, Vicar of Halifax who officiated, said: “Eric led a full life on earth, and in his life he created a legacy within the football world, and of a loving family man.”

A Tweet Up of social media users
from churches and cathedrals across the Diocese of Leeds took place at Church House to encourage and inspire those seeking to make the most of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The event brought together church goers to listen to guest speakers who shared presentations about online interaction and the use of social media.

Five new Honorary Canons have been installed at Wakefield Cathedral
in recognition of their ‘heavy lifting’ in the service of Christ, to help make Jesus known across the young Diocese of Leeds. The Sunday afternoon choral evensong included the first installation of canons led by the recently appointed Dean of Wakefield, the Very Revd Simon Cowling, who described it as “a great day for the cathedral, welcoming five new honorary canons who all bring their individual gifts and talents.”
