Clergy and laity joined together at a service to bless holy oils and reaffirm their vows at Ripon Cathedral. Maundy Thursday saw the Rt Revd Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds, thank the filled building for the dedication and hard work in so many diverse roles across our diocese.  Read more here
Our diverse diocese has provided wonderful images of Easter services and celebrations which feature on our Camera Club Facebook page. All are welcome to join the club and submit pictures that help spread the good news of Anglican life, worship, work and engagement in our diocese.  Read more here
Prayers for the victims of bomb attacks on Sri Lankan churches and hotels which has already claimed 253 lives have been offered across the diocese, including a vigil in Bradford's City Park. On Easter Sunday, Bishop of Leeds Nick Baines preached at Wakefield Cathedral and amidst the joy of that spiritual occasion, he also led prayers for the dead, injured and bereaved.  Read more here
The Archbishops of Canterbury and York, Justin Welby and John Sentamu, have invited Christians around the world to pray for more people to know Christ. The invitation comes in the run-up to the now-annual Thy Kingdom Come global wave of prayer, which runs from Ascension to Pentecost.  Read more here
Flags of St George flew from our churches, minsters and cathedrals in honour of England's patron saint. Many special services and parades were held on Sunday, April 28, when uniformed youth movements including Scouts, Guides, Cubs and Brownies joined civic leaders, such as at Bradford Cathedral.  Read more here
A digital front row seat at Easter events was given to Instagram users across two of the churches in our diocese. The congregations of St George’s Church in Leeds and St Mark’s in Harrogate took over the Diocese of Leeds Instagram account to allow followers to see pictures and short video clips of their Easter events and services, using the Instagram Stories feature.  Read more here
Around the Areas
Bradford's Faith Trail which takes walkers to five different places of worship kicks off this weekend. It is always held on the first Saturday of each month from now until October and visits: Our Lady and St Peter's Roman Catholic Church on Leeds Road; the Abu Bakar Masjid (mosque); the Shree Lakshmi Narayan Hindu Temple; the Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara; and then Bradford Cathedral. Bishop Mark Sowerby is to be the next Principal of the College of the Resurrection in succession to Fr Peter Allan CR, who will retire at the end of the academic year. With his wife, Ruth, he will move to Mirfield from the Diocese of Chichester, where he has been Bishop of Horsham since 2009. Bishop Mark, who has three adult daughters, is no stranger to the Northern Province nor, indeed, to Mirfield. Read more here
After over twenty years of being a blood donor, a local vicar serving in the Armley area has now achieved a landmark number of 500 donations . Since 1996 the Revd Andrew Pearon, Priest in Charge of Wyther Venerable Bede, has consistently been a platelet donor, which takes around an hour and a half to extract, and from 2017 has also started to give plasma. Curate Abbie Palmer will descend the dizzy heights of Ripon Cathedral's south west tower to raise cash for a new nave altar at her church. Revd Abbie, currently a curate at St Michael and All Angels, Beckwithshaw, will join up to 96 brave souls at the sponsored abseiling day on Saturday, May 18, which is primarily to boost the Cathedral Development Fund. Hope will be the theme in Wakefield Cathedral this Sunday as it marks the city’s 130th birthday with a service of celebration and thanks with the Bishop of Wakefield, the Rt Revd Tony Robinson and civic leaders. It was in 1888 when Queen Victoria issued a Royal Charter declaring the Borough of Wakefield a city. Read more here

On Monday, May 6 join Ripon Cathedral for their annual Cathedral Beer Festival. With award winning beers from around Yorkshire, with tasty Wine, Cider and Pimms on offer as well as delicious hot food, plenty of activities for the children and live music playing throughout the day. It is a great day out for all the family and not to be missed! Find out more here.
Taking place in each of the areas, we are inviting people to join us for Social Media Skills Camps. These evenings aim to bring people to gether to share, discuss and discover how we can best use social media in our churches. The first will be at Church House, Leeds on Tuesday, June 18 at 7pm. Monday, June 3 the Church of England Digital Team are travelling to Church House, Leeds to deliver a training day exploring digital and social media for churches. It is for anyone in a parish involved with their churches social media, website or A Church Near You page. Running from 10am until 4pm, it will be a practical day focused on topics such as: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Writing for the web. Find out more and book a place here.
Every Parish is encouraged to have a disability representative . This important training day on Saturday, May 11 outlines the role of the disability rep and explains the support and information available. The event takes place in Ripon, and is open for existing reps and anyone else considering the role. Refreshments will be provided but please bring a packed lunch with you. Find out more here
On Saturday, May 11 at 10am the Big Turnaround day will be taking place at Halifax Minster. Church leaders, PCC members and clergy are invited to explore how to change the culture of our churches, build an effective evangelism strategy, make plans and discover or re-discovering the inspiration of God’s Holy Spirit. For m ore information and to book please visit the Eventbrite page.
From Sunday, May 12 to Sunday, May 26 Pray for Schools Fortnight will be taking place. The vision is to bring together people from local churches and others involved in education – parents, students, teachers, g overnors, staff and volunteers – to pray strategically for schools in their area and those involved in them. Former Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams will be delivering special lectures on Monday, May 20 at Bradford Cathedral. He will look at what goes on in the writing of poetry, in various contexts across the centuries – the place of rhyme and metre, the way images can be used, and the relation between poetry and other kinds of seeing or thinking, including religious f aith. "Stitching for Wellbeing" is a monthly textiles course starting on Tuesday, May 14, 10am - 12.30pm at Dewsbury Minster. Run by the Revd Anne Wood, it offers a gentle and mindful break from the usual pace of life. Using simple r unning stitch the focus will be on the stilling and the stitching, more than the making! From Ascension (May 30) to Pentecost (June 9) the Archbishops of Canterbury and York have invited Christians around the world to pray for more people to know Christ. The invitation comes in the run-up to the now-annual Thy Kingdom Come global wave of prayer. If your church would like to get involved, there are lots of great resources available on the Thy Kingdom Come website.
The free monthly printed news for May was delivered around the diocese on April 15 -   check pick-up points and where your church's are here. This month's issue includes: a New Strategy for our Maturing Diocese approved by Synod, a 'Green Journey' refreshed for future needs, a Diocesan education conference bringing 200 delegates to Leeds and Prog Rock coming to our Cathedrals.

Are you wanting to reduce your library? Theological Colleges overseas can make good use of those books and there is an effective means to pass them on. As part of the Charity Feed the Minds, the Overseas Book Service provides Colleges throughout the African and Asian continents with contributions to their libraries. The Overseas Book Service ‘happens’ from a base in Bradford. Find out more and contact them here
