A specially-tailored course on church planting is to be run for the first time outside London in Leeds early next year. The Plant Course is a seven-session programme designed to equip church planters and their teams in the three to 9 months leading up to their plant and is being run at St George’s, Leeds in February. Members of the three Abrahamic faiths, Judaism, Islam and Christianity, have recently gathered at a church in our diocese for a chance to explore the faiths together. The event was standing room only, with many visitors rarely seen in church there to learn more about the beliefs and traditions of particularly Islam and Judaism . Read more here
Guests of a shelter in the Leeds area recently enjoyed the cooking of a Bishop. Bishop of Kirkstall Paul Slater cooked the evening meal for the guests of the West Yorkshire Destitute Asylum Network Night Shelter, who have been accommodated in the Welcome Centre of St John and St Barnabas, Belle Isle, Leeds. The Diocese of Leeds are looking for young Christians to take part in a longstanding exchange program with a diocese in the USA next year. There has been a youth exchange program with the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia for over 40 years, where young people from our diocese and theirs alternate visiting each other.  Read more here
Christianity still plays a large part in the life of thriving scout groups across our region, says Mark Edwards, Scout County Commissioner for North Yorkshire. Mr Edwards said: “Many Scout groups across North Yorkshire have direct links with the church....There is a strong bond between the volunteers, young people and church clergy and congregations." The Revd Canon Mark Oakley has accepted an invitation from the Bishop of Leeds to become Canon Theologian at Wakefield Cathedral. In this honorary role Canon Oakley will support the Bishop and the Cathedral Chapter in their theological reflections and encourage integrity in their discernment and decision-making. Read more here
New pilgrimage routes have been unveiled between our wonderful cathedrals and other “holy magnets” in our diocese. The British Pilgrimage Trust and the Association of English Cathedrals have drawn together a host of walks including the Paulinus Way, a one-week, 65-mile walk from Todmorden to York Minster. The Revd Brendan Bassett has been recently announced as Jesus Shaped People (JSP) Team Leader. Brendan will head up the Core Team that is spearheading the spread of JSP across the UK, through the growth of a team of Regional Co-ordinators who are building the capacity of JSP. Read more here
Around the Areas
A day devoted to boosting the greenery of Bradford saw 750 trees planted at a nature reserve by volunteers from the Cathedral and community. The first day of National Tree Week 2019 saw the trees planted at the Denso Marston Nature Reserve to also provide some much needed flood support. A new ministry based from a double decker bus in Dewsbury has been officially declared open for passengers by Bishop of Huddersfield Jonathan Gibbs. On Wednesday December 4 the Bishop joined the team running the new ministry, Destination 211, for worship and prayer on the bus before the first after school session began.  Read more here
Jesus will found in hundreds of places across the Harehills area of Leeds this Advent, thanks to the work of the Oakwood Church knitters. 
The church decided to show that “God is with us everywhere” by knitting hundreds of small models of baby Jesus in a manger, and giving them out at the church’s Advent and Christmas services and Roundhay St John’s school fair.  Read more here
Seasonal delights pleased visitors at Ripon Cathedral’s recent Christmas fair, which proved to be their busiest fair ever. The cathedral saw 3,570 visitors through the doors to escape the rain and enjoy the Christmas Gift & Food Fair. The event raised £24,797, which is the largest amount the event has ever raised. Myths have been broken down and truths told about the extent of homelessness in Wakefield at the latest Eat Up Stand Up event at Wakefield Cathedral. Wakefield’s Community Awareness Programme (CAP) leader Kevin Dobson was the guest speaker at the event and told the 40-plus members of the audience some hard facts about the city’s homelessness problem. St George's Church in Leeds city centre are running an exciting programme of Christmas events this December, including a coral service on Sunday, December 15 and concert taken by Durham Ca thedral Choir on Monday, December 16 at 12pm. Find out more about their programme of events here.

On Sunday, December 15 from 3.30pm, come to Ripon Cathedral for a special Evensong, accompanied with a harp performa nce, to celebrate half a centenary of Ripon Cathedral's Choir performing Britten's Ceremony of Carols. This iconic piece of music was first introduced by Ronald Perrin, then Director of Music, to Ripon Cathedral some 50 years ago. Find out more here
Fountains Church, Bradford are really excited to be running their first Café Christingle in the Cake'ole down in city park. This will be great fun for families with children of all ages, featuring some songs, crafts and loads of cake! (Please note the Cake'ole only take cash) 4:30 - 5:30 pm Saturday, 14th December. 
This December why not Quietly Contemplate Christmas at Parcevall Hall ? These two days towards the end of advent are an opportunity to enjoy simple pleasures, peace, calm and nourishment before the bustle of Christmas. The retreat will be from 4pm on Wednesday, December 18 - Friday, December 20. Find out more here
This advent season, Tearfund are coming to town with Cathy Burton, Yvonne Lyon, Paul Bell & David Lyon for their first Christmas Concerts tour. Come, all ye faithful, to St Peter's in Rawdon on Friday, December 13 and join the celebration in an evening of festive cheer with beautiful acoustic carols and original songs. Find out more here
