Maturing in Christ, a five-year strategy for the Diocese of Leeds, has been overwhelmingly approved by our Synod. The strategy, which in Bishop Nick Baines' words, "puts the parishes, schools and churches at the centre" was presented in revised form to delegates in Harrogate and supported without any opposition and only one abstention. The Ven Jonathan Gough, former Assistant Chaplain General to the Army, has been installed as the new Archdeacon for Richmond and Craven. At a service presided over by Bishop of Kirkstall, the Rt Revd Paul Slater, Archdeacon Jonathan made his Declaration of Assent and swore oaths of allegiance before a congregation of family, friends, clergy and the Diocesan Secretary, Debbie Child. Monday, March 11 marked the 25th anniversary of women’s ordination in the Church of England and Revd Canon Wendy Wilby, has told how it felt to be in the “Class of ‘94”. Now retired, Wendy was ordained deacon at Ripon Cathedral in 1990, made a priest there in 1994 and is now one of its honorary minor canons. Read more here
An ambitious environment policy to support development of an "eco-diocese" is now in place with Synod's approval. And the new document comes with a template of aims and actions for parishes to discuss and then create their own green strategies. Read more here
Shock and grief at the terrible shootings of Muslim worshippers in New Zealand mosques has prompted active public support from Christians across our Diocese. Some examples of that engagement include how in Leeds, Pioneer Minister at St Margaret & All Hallows, Heston Groenewald joined in prayer at the city's Grand Mosque.  Read more here
Cricketers from Richmond to Barnsley, Hawes to Halifax are needed for the Diocese of Leeds Cricket Team 2019. Vicar of Otley, Graham Buttanshaw has launched an appeal for would-be players to get in touch and take part in friendly sporting rivalry within a national competition. “The team welcomes clergy, readers, ordinands, and full-time church workers, regardless of gender and from any denomination, to play in our Church Times Cup matches." Born in Bradford, Wellsprings Together, the new Anglican Diocese of Leeds joint venture with the Church Urban Fund is gearing up to work across the diocese. The partnership has been made possible by funding from Allchurches Trust and its role is to enhance the capacity of churches’ mission and neighbourliness in communities across this huge and diverse area, helping churches respond to the complex needs people face in their neighbourhoods. Listening to God - a prayer group with a difference , has now been running for seven years at Christ Church, Pellon in Halifax. Worshipper David Ramanauska set up a regular meeting in Christ Church for those who were interested in learning how to hear from God for themselves and others. Read more here
In partnership with the National Churches Trust and Ecclesiastical Insurance Group, the Diocese of Leeds welcomed representatives from parishes in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire to a training event about the importance of the ministry of welcome to church visitors, pilgrims and tourists . Training covered a variety of topics, including an exciting project funded by Discover England to develop experiences in churches to attract American visitors. Read more here
A new book on small places of worship has picked St Leonard's, Chapel-le-Dale , as one of Britain's finest examples. Sitting high in the Dales, north of Ingleton, this beautiful church began life as a chapel of ease for isolated farming folk in the 17th Century. Read the full article here
A bumper number of children have dropped in for arts and craft sessions run at Wakefield Cathedral during the last 12 months. Community Outreach Officer, Gillian Bunn, joined the cathedral team last year with one job: to better engage with the community at large – but especially with younger families.  Read more here
Events
Spring Harvest , the national teaching and worship conference returns for a second year to Harrogate from April 13 to 17. This year the conference will celebrate its 40th birthday, and as well as offering inspirational teaching and worship, there are extensive children and youth activities. Find out more here
Churches across different denominations and traditions are joining together in the North Yorkshire town of Wetherby to host the Riding Lights Theatre Company . Preluding Holy Week, the internationally renowned theatre group will be presenting their passion play, The Narrow Road, at St James’ Church on Friday, April 12 as part of their national tour. Mother's Day Runaways are taking place, on March 30, in some of the churches in our diocese. If you find Mothering Sunday painful for whatever reason, this reflective service has been designed with you in mind. These informal gatherings aim to help acknowledge the bittersweet emotions surrounding Mothering Sunday. Offering the space to grieve and inviting the God who loves us into our stories of struggle. The Company of Servers are holding their Spring Eucharist on Saturday, March 30 at Holy Trinity, Rothwell. Everyone is welcome and all servers are welcome to wear their robes for the Eucharist. Try something new! Bradford Cathedral's bell ringing open day is open to all background and abilities! You can learn about the rich heritage and history of Bradford Cathedral's World War I bells, and experience a skill that cannot be experienced anywhere else in central Bradford. A training day for current or prospective volunteer lay trainers is to take place at the Bingley Trinity Centre on Monday, March 25. Starting at 10am, this Train the Trainer Workshop aims to encourage confidence and skill in delivering courses. The day will include models of teaching and learning, confident leadership and using the Digital Learning Platform. Find out more here

The free monthly printed news for April was delivered around the diocese on March 15 -   check pick-up points and where your church's are here. This month's issue includes: the national launch of a Persian language Holy Communion at Wakefield Cathedral, installation of a new archdeacon of Richmond and Craven, a fact finding trip to Hanover and a new service for deaf Christians.
The Church of England has called for communities to join together in conversation and prayer as Brexit discussions reach a pivotal point. Churches are encouraged to host informal café-style meetings over the weekend of 30th March to bring together people of all standpoints and encourage open discussion. Backed by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, newly-commissioned resources launched on Monday invi te people to ‘get together and chat over a cup of tea and pray for our country and our future’. Goodbox are a technology provider for the charity sector, building contactless solutions which effortlessly connect donors and causes. They have recently signed a contract with Parish Buying and worked with a number of churches, Cathedrals and parishes to date. In April this year, they will be launching a custom built offering plate, called the GoodPlate . St Paul's Ireland Wood has made a video to mark the first anniversary of the arrival of vicar Mark Harlow and some forty new worshippers from St George's Leeds. Watch the video here
On Thursday March 28, Leeds Diocese are running a special training day on evangelism. For so many in the church today, evangelism can be a scary concept and difficult to apply to our everyday lives.
